Tyreek Hill’s road back to the NFL has more than one checkpoint, and not all of them are on a practice field. NFL insider James Palmer noted that “a suspension could possibly come if he signs with a team,” as the league keeps tabs on the 32-year-old free agent’s legal situation.

That situation took a turn last week, when a Miami civil jury found Hill liable on two counts of battery involving his estranged wife, Lakeeta Vaccaro. However, with talk of a Kansas City Chiefs reunion still hanging around, the league office isn’t the only hurdle Palmer flagged.

NFL Is Watching Tyreek Hill Even Without a Team

Palmer brought Hill up with the Chiefs in mind, and the catch came quickly.

“Everybody has Tyreek Hill circled because he’s played in it (the Chiefs’ system). You know what I mean? But there’s a lot going on with Tyreek. The NFL is continuing to monitor it, I’m told, directly by the league. Even though he’s a free agent, not on a team, they do continue to monitor his whole situation and gather all the information about what’s going on in his legal situation.”

In the civil case, the jury tied the two battery counts to separate incidents in January 2024 and April 2025 and awarded Vaccaro $500,000 in compensatory damages. It found Hill not liable on eight other claims, which included allegations of battery, assault, and continuing domestic violence, and declined to award punitive damages.

Hill denied most of the allegations during the trial, although he acknowledged shoving Vaccaro during one incident.

The NFL weighed in after the verdict with a statement to Pro Football Talk that squares with Palmer’s reporting: “We have been monitoring developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.”

That policy allows the league to review allegations of misconduct independently of the criminal justice system, and a civil finding of liability doesn’t automatically settle what discipline, if any, follows.

Tyreek Hill’s Health and Where a Kansas City Chiefs Reunion Stands

Then Palmer moved from the courtroom to the training room: “Nobody knows entirely where he is health-wise.”

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, offered a sunnier read last week: “I don’t know that he’s 100% today, but he’s close, and he’ll get there really soon.”

Hill hasn’t played since he dislocated his left knee and tore multiple ligaments, including his ACL, in the Miami Dolphins’ September 2025 game against the New York Jets. The injury required surgery and ended his season after four games, and the Dolphins released the eight-time Pro Bowler in February. He has shared videos documenting his recovery, but no timetable for his return has been confirmed.

Those questions follow Hill to any homecoming in Kansas City, where he helped win Super Bowl LIV before being traded to Miami in 2022. The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones took stock of the receiver room of a Chiefs team that is 5-0 and first in the AFC West, and of where a Hill reunion stands.

Rosenhaus, for his part, sounded upbeat about the timing last week: “I think a deal could happen any time.”

Finding the right fit is another matter, and he laid out a checklist: “When you sign with a team mid-season, you’d like to go to a winner. Number two, as a wide receiver, you’d like to go to a team that needs a wide receiver. Number three, you’d like to go to a team that’s got a pretty good quarterback. And number four, Tyreek’s gonna bring a lot of impact. We’ve got to get a fair contract. And that’s always complex to negotiate in the middle of a season.”
