Beleaguered Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni’s prospects for the season went from bad to worse after it was announced that Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jalen Hurts will be out for the season after doctors discovered multiple blood clots in his lungs. The news broke after the Eagles suffered a demoralizing 25-14 Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers, dropping to 2-4 on the season.
After news of Hurts’ predicament was announced, Hall of Famer Cris Carter suggested that the Eagles should bite the bullet and move on from Sirianni, ushering in a new chapter for the franchise.
During this week’s segment of the “Fully Loaded” podcast, Carter outlined a succession plan for the Eagles for the post-Sirianni era and pinpointed his preferred candidate for the job.
“This season’s over with, let’s go ahead and tank it. Let’s do the Miami Dolphins. But I’m not gonna pay the coach $150,000 for every game he loses,” Carter said. “And, Sirianni, do you continue with him? I wouldn’t. I’ve seen enough of him. And I don’t know if they wanna do it because of how the structure, the owner, the general manager, and then the coach in Philadelphia. But man, Mike Tomlin could never have any resources in Pittsburgh.”
Carter then outlined a whole list of reasons why Tomlin and Philadelphia would be a match made in heaven.
“If he had those types of resources, and those types of players and that type of defense, what could Mike Tomlin do with those types of players? Because he’s a free agent, you gotta think about that. You gotta think about bringing him over from Western PA over to the East Coast of Pennsylvania, and that would be an unbelievable hire.
“Let him get through the salary cap, which might hurt the first year or two, but you have a vet used to doing it with band aids.”
Despite Sirianni’s current struggles, he is one of the franchise’s most successful coaches. He is the first head coach in NFL history to lead his team to five consecutive playoff appearances, 3 division titles, 2 conference titles, and a Super Bowl win within his first five seasons.
After succeeding Doug Pederson, Sirianni became the first coach in franchise history to reach multiple Super Bowls (LVII & LIX), beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the latter. Sirianni has compiled a 6-4 postseason record and built the Eagles into perennial contenders.
This season, however, the Eagles have regressed and are struggling on both sides of the ball, earning a PFN Defense Impact score of 73.8 (No. 23 in the NFL) and an Offense Impact score of 69.4 (No. 29 in the league).
With news of Hurts’ blood clots out in the open, several fans and analysts expect the Eagles to count 2026 as a lost season.
