Two brothers. Two countries. One very awkward family reunion.

Rugby has produced some famous brothers over the years. But not all of them have worn the same international shirt.

Some have played against each other. Others have ended up on opposite sides of the Six Nations.

And one England legend has a brother who played for Thailand. Yes, Thailand.

Here are 10 sets of rugby brothers who have represented different nations, or could soon do so.

1. Marcus Smith and Luc Smith – England and Philippines

Most England fans know Marcus Smith. Far fewer will know his younger brother has played for the Philippines.

Luc Smith has represented the country in rugby sevens.

Both brothers were born in Manila. Their mother is Filipino, while their father is English.

Marcus went on to become an England star. Luc has kept the family name flying in the country where they were born.

Not a bad bit of rugby trivia for the pub.

2. Jamie George and Gareth George – England and Thailand

Jamie George has faced the All Blacks, captained England and won more than 100 Test caps.

His brother Gareth? He played for Thailand.

And, just like Jamie, he's a hooker.

Gareth qualified through residency and played against Singapore.

It's one of those rugby facts that sounds made up. But it's true.

3. Jesse Kriel and Dan Kriel – South Africa and USA

Jesse Kriel has two World Cup winners' medals in his collection.

His twin brother Dan is chasing a rather different dream.

The former Junior Springbok has been named in the USA's extended squad. He hopes to become eligible for the Eagles in 2027.

That could make things interesting at the next World Cup.

Imagine Jesse lining up for the Springboks with his own twin brother wearing an American shirt.

Dan still needs to earn his first senior USA cap, but it's one to watch.

4. Rieko Ioane and Akira Ioane – New Zealand and Samoa

Rieko Ioane has spent years causing problems for defences in an All Blacks shirt.

Now his older brother Akira is set to wear Samoa's colours.

The back-row forward won 21 caps for New Zealand before falling out of the Test picture.

He has now earned a Samoa call-up ahead of November's Nations Cup.

There's a lovely family link, too.

Their dad, Eddie, played for Samoa at the 1991 World Cup.

Akira could make his debut against Zimbabwe on 7 November.

5. Manu Tuilagi and Alesana Tuilagi – England and Samoa

The Tuilagi family could almost fill a rugby team on their own.

Manu became an England star, winning 60 caps and reaching the 2019 World Cup final.

His older brother Alesana played for Samoa.

The giant winger won 37 caps and featured at three World Cups.

In fact, Manu's five older rugby-playing brothers all represented Samoa.

His full first name, Manusamoa, is even a tribute to the country.

Imagine having that much rugby talent around the dinner table.

6. Duhan van der Merwe and Akker van der Merwe – Scotland and South Africa

Duhan van der Merwe was born in South Africa. These days, Scotland fans are rather glad he moved north.

His older brother Akker stayed on the South African route.

The hooker won three Springboks caps before Duhan made his Scotland debut.

Their family once had a shirt made with Scotland on one half and South Africa on the other.

A sensible way to avoid upsetting either son.

The brothers have yet to face each other in a senior Test.

7. Freddie Burns and Billy Burns – England and Ireland

Freddie Burns played five times for England.

His younger brother Billy ended up wearing green.

Billy qualified for Ireland through his grandfather after moving to Ulster.

He made his Test debut against Wales in 2020.

That left the Burns family with two international fly-halves and two different Six Nations shirts.

You'd imagine England against Ireland became quite a big occasion in their house.

8. Charles Piutau and Siale Piutau – New Zealand and Tonga

Charles Piutau was once one of New Zealand's brightest young backs.

He won 17 caps for the All Blacks before heading overseas.

His older brother Siale played for Tonga, earning more than 40 caps.

The brothers later became teammates at Bristol Bears.

Then came another twist.

Charles switched to Tonga himself and played at the 2023 World Cup.

So while the brothers began their Test careers in different shirts, they ended up representing the same country.

9. Tana Umaga and Mike Umaga – New Zealand and Samoa

Tana Umaga was a proper All Blacks great.

The centre won 74 caps, captained New Zealand and became one of the most feared players in the game.

His brother Mike represented Samoa.

And unlike some of the other brothers on this list, these two actually faced each other.

Tana played for New Zealand against Samoa, with Mike on the other side.

Family bragging rights don't get much bigger than that.

10. Matt Cockbain and Brent Cockbain – Australia and Wales

Matt Cockbain helped Australia win the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

The flanker earned 63 caps for the Wallabies during one of their best periods.

His younger brother Brent took a different route.

The lock played 24 times for Wales and featured at the 2003 World Cup.

Two brothers, two countries and two very different rugby careers.

Not many families can say they've had a World Cup winner and a Welsh international at the same dinner table.
