Liverpool fans will feel better about Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury after what happened vs LASK

Liverpool bounced back from their chastening 3-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday with a midweek win over LASK in the Champions League.

Ahead of another testing Premier League clash on Saturday, this time away at in-form Brentford, Andoni Iraola really needed his team to come up with the goods. Thankfully, despite a late defensive wobble, they delivered.

Once again, Liverpool had to make do without Dominik Szoboszlai, who made the trip to Austria with his teammates, and Iraola has made it clear that Szoboszlai may not feature against Brentford as well. But while that is obviously a blow for the Reds, the performance of Trey Nyoni against LASK suggested that they do not need to worry about their midfield at the Gtech.

Trey Nyoni gives Liverpool more control

With Ryan Gravenberch also suspended for Saturday, it is fairly certain that Nyoni starts against Brentford alongside Alexis Mac Allister.

Mac Allister was understandably dropped to the bench by Iraola for Wednesday, with the Spaniard unable to afford another issue in the middle of the pitch.

Gravenberch, definitely in for a rest at the weekend, put in another good display, but it was Nyoni who caught the eye, passing the ball crisply through the lines and putting his foot in where it mattered against LASK.

The 19-year-old made the most successful passes on the pitch (83), only failing to find his target seven times, showcasing his willingness to get on the ball and control the game.

Liverpool were more than happy to give Nyoni the ball, and, just as he did while playing next to Mac Allister in the Carabao Cup win over Tottenham, the teenager seemed to give the Reds a lot more balance.

Six of his seven long balls were accurate, suggesting his ability to mix his range up, while Nyoni also made six defensive contributions, taking his responsibility as Liverpool’s deepest-lying midfielder with appropriate seriousness.

His tally of one win in three attempted ground duels could be bettered, but Nyoni did win both of his aerial battles, which could come in handy against Brentford.

Iraola finally substituted the former Leicester City prospect with seven minutes left to play, hinting at his role to come on Saturday. If Szoboszlai is passed fit, it could still be that the Hungarian starts next to Mac Allister, but if he misses out once again, no supporter should now feel any kind of concern about throwing Nyoni in for his first Premier League start. The kid is absolutely ready.
