Sam Morsy on Blackburn Rovers form and Gudjohnsen confidence

The midfielder has made a positive impact since his arrival at Ewood Park at the start of the season, starting 10 games in the Championship.

Although he won’t be involved at Swansea City this weekend due to suspension, Morsy reckons the group is in a good place.

“It's good spirits, I think we're confident,” he said. “I think we're a good team. I think there's lots of things to improve on, which we know we can.

“But all in all, it's a competitive squad. Players have come back now so they have to really make sure they stake a claim for a team spot.

“They have to push the lads who are playing really because that's how a really competitive environment develops, but it's everybody's responsibility to do that and keep competing.

“I think Yuki (Ohashi) is almost back as well, which is going to be a massive plus for us because I can see what he offers and what he's going to offer. We just have to keep competing, stay together and keep trying to win games.”

Morsy didn’t get to share the pitch with Ohashi many times before the Japanese forward picked up a hamstring injury.

“I had only been training a couple of weeks and (played against) Wolves, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United,” he recalled. “You can see what he offers and even last season, so he's going to be a great asset to have him back.”

But in Ohahsi’s absence, Andri Gudjohnsen has been enjoying a purple patch in front of goal. The Iceland international has scored four goals in his last couple of appearances and is already up to nine for the campaign at club level.

“He's in great form, doing really well, really confident,” said Morsy. “And again, he's improving, he's getting better all the time and he just has to keep going.

“But, of course, it’s a huge asset to have someone to score goals. He's a really good finisher, he's really instinctive and that's a really good combination. A confident boy as well, doing really well and hopefully he can continue.”

It has been a positive start to the season for Rovers, who were battling against relegation last term before Tony Mowbray’s return to the dugout.

However, things could be even better. Mowbray’s men have dropped 13 points from winning positions, and only Burnley have dropped more at this stage.

But Morsy isn’t concerned by that trend as long as Rovers keep approaching games in a positive way.

“I think stats can be misleading, to be fair, because if you score a goal in the first minute of the game, it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win the game,” he said.

“I think points-wise, we are doing OK. We've taken the lead in some games and kept it, and we've come back in other games.

“But of course, we want to look at that, we want to improve it. Of course, we want to go ahead, we want to keep all the leads. It's something we can do, but the main thing is you are trying to win games.”
