Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has pinpointed why midfielder Lyall Cameron is finally thriving and looks “happy” in his new environment following his departure from Ibrox.

The 24-year-old Rangers loanee delivered a moment of individual brilliance to earn a vital point for Dundee United in their 1-1 draw against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Saturday, 17 October. Trailing in the second half, the visitors needed an attacking spark, and the midfielder stepped up under immense pressure.

Adjusting his body shape while losing his balance, he controlled a tricky ball mid-fall before guiding a precision finish beyond the goalkeeper. Cameron’s goal and performance for Dundee United at the weekend have already drawn praise from Kris Boyd, and now, Hutton has joined the mix.

Breaking down the technical brilliance of Cameron’s strike in the latest episode of Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club (Monday, 19 October), Hutton was quick to highlight just how difficult the execution was for the player on the pitch.

He said: “Let me tell you why it’s so good. He’s actually falling down, so to keep the control of it… because that could have easily went wide or up and over the bar.”

Beyond the raw mechanics of the finish, the former Scotland international believes that moving away from the high-pressure environment of Ibrox, where consistent first-team minutes were difficult to come by, has proved to be the defining catalyst for the player’s development.

Hutton emphasised that securing guaranteed playing time elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership has re-energised the midfielder’s confidence and allowed his natural technical capabilities to take centre stage. He added:

“I’ve got a feeling he’ll do well there. It seems like he’s found a home now. He’s happy. He’s enjoying his football. He’s playing. Probably didn’t get the chances that he would obviously have liked at Rangers, but there’s an opportunity for him, and he’s shown everybody what he’s capable of, and that’s a great finish.”

Echoing Hutton’s glowing assessment, fellow pundit Michael Stewart underscored that the midfielder possesses unquestionable quality, but noted that team tactical structure is crucial to maximising his potential output on a weekly basis.

“Lyall Cameron, of course, is a quality player. But you need to play to his strengths”, Stewart noted.

The fierce competition for places in Govan often restricted fringe players from receiving the regular run of games required to build rhythm and confidence. For young Scottish talent, making the transition out of Glasgow can often carry a psychological hurdle, but finding an environment where a manager trusts them implicitly makes all the difference in their tactical maturity.

Now establishing himself as a vital central creative outlet away from Ibrox, Cameron’s continued progression and goalscoring contributions will remain a subject of close interest for Rangers supporters keeping tabs on former players thriving across top-flight football.
