Angel Reese drew a fierce wave of backlash for quite literally turning her back on the Dream during Atlanta’s win over the Valkyries in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals.
With just over seven minutes left in the third quarter of the Dream’s 79-65 victory on Monday, Reese emphatically waved for the ball while posting up against Kayla Thornton in the paint. Yet Dream guard Jordin Canada failed to get her the ball, opting instead to dish it behind the three-point line.
As the Dream passed the rock around the arc, Reese — who was slammed for “giving up” during the penultimate play of Game 1 — continued to shout for the ball before finally giving up and storming towards the sideline.
Taking to social media, droves of viewers criticized Reese for the emotional display. “She has the emotional maturity of an 11 year old,” an X user wrote, with another adding: “WOW. She actually threw a tantrum in the middle of a finals game. Mind blowing.”
A third chimed in, “I understand the frustration with the mismatch for sure, but quitting on the play is some childish a-- s---.”
This is hardly the first time that Reese has been slammed for her behavior on basketball’s biggest stage.
With the Dream down 66-64 in the final 10 seconds of Game 1, Rhyne Howard attempted to drive to the basket but lost control of the ball. The standout guard then passed it to Allisha Gray, who launched a desperate airball from deep behind the three-point line.
The errant shot landed in the hands of Kaila Charles, who quickly moved it along to Gabby Williams as precious seconds drained from the clock.
Instead of committing a foul on Williams to halt play, Reese dropped her arms and casually walked away, appearing to concede the game.
Social media erupted as viewers condemned Reese for failing to give the Dream a last-ditch opportunity to mount a comeback. "Angel Reese gets upset that her teammate missed the shot, and then completely gives up when they were only down two with 5 seconds left. Go for the ball! Don't give up Angel,” one person said.
Someone else argued, "Angel Reese you cannot have that 2nd half body language. You cannot shrink yourself and self defeat and be so lackadaisical.”

Reese, to her credit, brushed aside the previous incidents and took over Monday’s contest, recording 30 points, 16 rebounds and three assists en route to propelling the Dream to their first WNBA Finals win in franchise history.
The dominant performance more than made up for her showing in Game 1, during which she failed to score a single point in the third or fourth quarters.
"I let my team down last game, not really contributing as much as I could in the second half," Reese told reporters during a postgame press conference.
"I just wanted to make sure I came out tonight and left my mark. And I think I did that."
