Indiana kept its path to the College Football Playoff alive by squeaking out an overtime win on the road at Michigan.
The Hoosiers did so by relying almost entirely on their run game and defense after halftime: Quarterback Josh Hoover had just two passing attempts. The first was an interception in the third quarter. The next was a 21-yard gain to Brock Schott in overtime that set up Hoover's 4-yard game-winning rushing touchdown.
"He wasn't 100% today," Cignetti said postgame. "But we knew he'd play. We went in the bag. It was rough."
The fourth-year starter, who has been one of the nation's top quarterbacks this season, played through Saturday's game with an apparent injury that he sustained in last week's loss to Ohio State. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Saturday that Hoover is playing through an arm and wrist issue.
Hoover completed eight of 18 passes for 81 yards and an interception against the Wolverines' defense, snapping a five-game stretch where he reached at least 200 passing yards. Hoover finished the first half completing seven of 16 passes for 60 yards. His longest throw in regulation was a 15-yard pass to Charlie Becker on first down with 11 seconds left in the second quarter.
Indiana moves to 7-1 overall on the season and will next host Minnesota at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 31.
