‘Nothing About This Was Derogatory,’ ‘Trying to Stir Up Trouble’ — NFL Fans React As Chiefs’ Super Bowl Champ Calls Out ESPN Star’s Patrick Mahomes Take

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has led the franchise to an unbeaten start to the 2026 season behind a dynamic offense featuring explosive running back Kenneth Walker III. Walker, who won the Super Bowl MVP in February, has added another dimension to the Chiefs offense, turning them into a Super Bowl dark horse.

On Friday, Super Bowl champion Mitchell Schwartz bitterly disputed ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky’s claim about Mahomes’ role in Walker’s understanding of the Chiefs’ plays.

Fans Defend ESPN Analyst After Patrick Mahomes’ Role Comments

During an appearance on Friday’s segment of the “NFL Live” show, Orlovsky interpreted Mahomes’ subtle hand signals as nonverbal run-game communication designed to help Walker anticipate how the blocking would unfold.

“There’s definitely some communication non-verbally that Patrick is giving Walker when it comes to the run game,” Orlovsky said.

Schwartz later hit back with a lengthy post on X slamming Orlovsky’s assertion about the communication between the Chiefs quarterback and running back.

“This feels incredibly demeaning to Kenneth Walker that you think he needs to be told what a simple 4 down front is and how that’s going to be blocked. And what a Bear front is, etc. Like he doesn’t know how to read basic defensive fronts and find the DL he’s supposed to key,” Schwartz fumed.

Steelers writer Jeremy Betz was not convinced that Orlovsky’s take was disrespectful to the running back.

“No need to be a homer, Mitch, lol. Nothing about this was derogatory to K9,” Betz corrected.

Basketball coach Casey Taylor explained the effective communication between the two Chiefs stars.

“Mahomes giving Walker additional information doesn’t imply Walker lacks football IQ. Two players processing the same information and communicating it is an advantage, not an insult,” Taylor wrote.

One fan accused the former Chiefs offensive tackle of manufacturing trouble out of nothing.

“Is it an alternate implication that this is what I’m seeing so that they’re on the same page? Seems like you’re trying to stir up trouble,” the fan posted.

One fan offered an apt analogy to dispute Schwartz’s accusation against Orlovsky.

“That’s YOUR implication. Seems like he was just stating how a QB and a RB are communicating well together. When a QB points out the Mike, is he implying no one else else knows who the Mike should be? [Expletive] are you talking about?” The fan opined.

Another fan urged Schwartz to make a proper counterpoint in his argument against Orlovsky.

“Get out your feelings big man or make a counterpoint,” the fan challenged.

Mahomes made his first block of the season during the Chiefs’ 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, shielding linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu, allowing Walker to score a routine touchdown and earning the running back’s praise during his postgame news conference.

The Chiefs signed Walker to a three-year deal with a base value of $43.05 million and a maximum value of $45 million after his Super Bowl-winning season with Seattle.

Walker is averaging 6.3 yards per carry on 106 attempts, the best mark among NFL running backs with at least 30 carries. He has earned the best PFN’s NFL Running Back Impact rating of 96.5 after amassing 665 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns.

With Mahomes under center and Walker helping him move the chains, the Chiefs boastPFN’s NFL Offense Impact grade of 82.2 (No. 7 in the NFL) this season. The Chiefs’ title credentials will be tested when Walker returns to Seattle to face off against his old team in a tasty Week 7 clash.
