Manchester United seeks help with stadium design

In a welcome distraction from on-pitch matters, fans are being asked to help shape the design of the club’s proposed 100,000-capacity ground.

Manchester United has today launched a 20-minute survey asking fans what they would like the replacement for Old Trafford to look and feel like.

Foster + Partners is appointed as the architect for the multi-billion-pound project and, earlier this year, the club acquired land 350 metres north-west of the existing ground from industrial developer and landlord Indurent on which to build it. The land cost the club £63.5m.

Early images of how the stadium may look released back in March 2025 suggested the main bowl would be enveloped by a tent-like structure with a three-pronged design – a nod to the club’s badge which features a devil holding a trident. It is unclear how wedded the club and Fosters are to this idea, or indeed how much the fans like it.

The consultation, which is only open to supporters with a supporter ID or membership number, will run for two weeks until 6 November.

It will ask questions on the following topics:

  • Creating a world-class football stadium and matchday experience for all fans
  • Heritage and legacy
  • Atmosphere
  • The wider campus
  • Getting to and from the stadium

Colette Roche, the chief executive for new stadium development at Manchester United, said: “Our proposed new stadium is one of the most significant projects Manchester United will undertake in the next 100 years, and it is vital that we shape it together with our fans.

“Above all else, this is a football stadium built for them, so getting the details right matters. That’s why we are committed to thorough and transparent engagement, ensuring supporters help inform key decisions on atmosphere, affordability, accessibility and the traditions that have made Old Trafford so special for so long.”

Roche added that, while there is excitement around the project, she recognises fans have “questions and concerns”.

“Listening to those views and ensuring they are shaping the design is a vital part of the process,” she said.

“By working together, we can create a world-class football stadium that supports success on the pitch, reflects the identity of Manchester United, and gives fans a home they can be proud of for generations to come.”

Following the survey period, Man United plans to hold a series of focus groups drilling down into further detail on issues raised.

The stadium would sit within a wider regeneration zone spanning 370 acres known as Wharfside, which is earmarked for 15,000 homes under a masterplan drawn up by Kings Cross masterplanner Allies and Morrison.
