KINAWLEY captain Sean McManus expects a ‘massive challenge’ when his side take on Devenish in the Fermanagh final, but he’s confident the Boru’s can make their own mark on the occasion.
Devenish go in as favourites after an impressive campaign in Division One, but Kinawley have shown plenty of character with hard-fought victories helping to build confidence in the squad.
Their extra-time win over Derrylin was a particularly demanding test and McManus hopes that experience will stand to them when the stakes are highest.
“We’ve had some hard-fought wins against a few teams, especially the Derrylin game going to extra-time. Hopefully that will stand to us,” McManus told the ‘Herald.
“Devenish are favourites and rightly so with their performances and playing Division One. It’s a massive challenge for us, but we’re hoping to perform on the day and see where it takes us.”
Ready for battle
McManus is under no illusions about the threat posed by Devenish, particularly their forward line, which contains several quality players with county experience.
Kinawley will need to be disciplined defensively and limit the space available to their opponents, while also taking their own scoring opportunities when they arise.
For McManus, however, the challenge is one to embrace rather than fear.
Kinawley have worked hard to reach the final and he believes the competition for places and the emergence of younger players have helped create a positive atmosphere around the team.
“It’s great to be preparing for a final. There’s a great buzz at training when you know there’s a final on the horizon,” McManus said.
“There are a lot of young lads coming through and fighting for places, which is great for the squad and the health of the panel.”
Leading by example
McManus is serving as captain for a second year and he regards the responsibility as ‘a privilege’.
He also believes the leadership available throughout the group has been a major positive as they prepare for the county showpiece.
“It’s a privilege to be asked to captain the team for a second year. It’s great to have leaders around the group who can step into that role.
“There are lots of leaders around the camp and it’s great to have that blend of experience and youth.”
The Boru’s forward was keen to acknowledge the work of manager Shaun Doherty and his backroom team, praising their commitment to the club and their understanding of the players.
“They know us well and really care about Kinawley football. It’s great to have those lads driving us on,” he said.
With a county title within reach, McManus hopes the occasion will bring the wider Kinawley community together behind the team.
The Kinawley ladies have enjoyed their share of final victories and McManus is eager to see the same support extended to the men as they aim to finish their campaign with silverware.
“Hopefully the whole community is looking forward to it and we get great support from family and everyone around the club,” he added.
