WWE held its first tryouts in Hawaii in years to scout local talent ahead of a live event, during which the city officially declared October 16 as WWE Day.
HONOLULU (KHON2) -- WWE is in Hawaii for the first time in years, and ahead of Friday's live event, it began the search for some local talent.
"We're out here doing a WWE tryout, trying to find the next big WWE Superstar," said Raquel Rodriguez, WWE Women's Intercontinental Champion. "I think the best thing about doing this out in Hawaii is that we're getting a really big mix of cultures, which is really beautiful to see."
Athletes were given the chance to do promos, hear feedback from current superstars, and even do some in-ring workouts.
"Like anything else, we want whatever we try and do, whether it's football, NFL, all professional aspects, you want people from here," said Makoa Chapa, a try-out participant from Kailua-Kona, a native and strongman competitor. "You want people from Hawaii to be inspired by it, sometimes it takes somebody to just set the tone, like so if one of us makes it or a bunch of us make it."
Unfortunately, try-outs are not open to the general public, but the WWE said getting the chance to connect with the local talent in Hawaii, a place they aren't often at, is very special.
"Getting to see these athletes come out here and showcase what they do and their cultures, and getting to get a little taste of that, it makes me hungrier for more," said Rodriguez. "I just want to explore more of Hawaii, I want to know more about these athletes, and I think they're doing a great job representing their culture."
Ahead of Friday's event, the City declared Oct. 16 as WWE Day, making it official with WWE Superstar and Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio.
"(Fans) are about to enjoy two of the greatest nights in the history of WWE, not only because of our performance, but because today is a very special day. Today is WWE day here," said Mysterio.
