Adam Murray praises Corey Edwards after first Barrow goal

Edwards signed for the Bluebirds last month after leaving Rochdale despite having trials for top Premier League academies over the summer.

The young midfielder bagged Barrow’s second goal in their 2-1 away win at Tamworth last Saturday.

Murray said: “We knew he was a good player when we brought him in, but if I'm being honest, I didn't realise how good he was.

“For a 19-year-old, he's got everything. He's physically dominant, he's technically unbelievable. For a young kid, he's got a real tactical experience, head on his shoulders, which is amazing for a coach.”

Murray said Edwards had a bright future ahead of him and his first goal was just the start of what’s to come.

The boss said: “That's always a big bonus. And his future's massive. He will go on to play top-level football, so we're lucky to have him at the minute.

“For us, it's a case of making sure that we nurture him right and we aid his development while he's with us. Him getting his goal on Saturday, that's just a minor of the things to come from Corey.”

The gaffer pointed to the number of young players that the Bluebirds have in their squad at the minute and how important it is to support them both on and off the pitch.

He said: “I put a big emphasis on people and relationships. For a young man, let alone a young footballer, the world's a scary place.

“It's a dangerous place at the minute, the way it's going. I think the way society is, it's not good. As a young footballer with high potential, that has to be managed in the right way.

“The physical elements, the game-time elements, they all come into that. At the end of the day, it's our job to make him better. That's what we get paid for as coaches.

“There's a responsibility to us on that as well. It's the all-round package. When you've got a young player, and we've got a lot of good young players at the minute who I truly believe will go on to have big success at much higher levels, it's important that we look after them and we develop them right in all areas.

“I'm fortunate that I've got a young staff as well and, even though they're young, we've already got a lot of experience to help these guys grow. That's our aim.”
