Wrexham boss Parkinson speaks on pressures of management

The 58-year-old moved up the longevity rankings following Andy Woodman's departure from Bromley this week, leaving only Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough with a longer tenure in the EFL.

Having taken charge of Wrexham in July 2021, Parkinson has guided the Reds from the National League to the Championship after securing a record-breaking three successive promotions.

But Parkinson admits more than two decades in the dugout have given him a deep appreciation for the pressures managers face, particularly when results turn against them.

"I have empathy and sympathy with managers across the board because there's so many examples going around at the moment that the spotlight always falls on the manager and sometimes there's other areas of the club where a manager may not have been helped," he said.

"There's managers who have come into jobs this summer who've lost a lot of key players and are getting a lot of criticism and when you lose, the spotlight comes on the manager.

"And when you win, that praise tends to get spread around everybody and unfortunately, that's never going to change.

"Because I've been a manager a long time, I understand what other managers are going through and my advice to all managers is get good people working with you and that's key for me.

"Get good staff, good people who are going to support you and be together.

"I'm fortunate here because we've got good staff, we've got great owners and the togetherness has taken us a long way because everybody wants to beat Wrexham.

"We know that, you just can't hide (from that), and that's going through all the divisions.

"Everywhere we've been, there's been that target and we've had a strength of unity throughout the club, and that's taken us to one place outside the play-offs last year. Hopefully we can go one better this year."

Woodman, who led Bromley to back-to-back promotions and a place in League One, was sacked following Tuesday's 4-0 defeat against Leicester City.

Parkinson expressed his sadness at the departure of Woodman, revealing he had exchanged messages shortly before the loss.

"Andy's a friend of mine," said Parkinson. "I text him the other night actually before the game to say 'Woody, don't underestimate the achievement of Bromley facing Leicester City'.

"I didn't know that he'd lost his job, I'm very sorry to hear that because he's done an incredible job at Bromley."
