The Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate has taken another interesting turn, and this time, the Portuguese superstar has come out on top. Ronaldo has beaten his longtime Argentine rival to win the inaugural Ballon d’Or of All Time (BOAT) award, giving his supporters another reason to celebrate. Despite Messi holding a record eight Ballon d’Or titles compared to Ronaldo's five, fans voted the former Manchester United star's 2008 triumph as the greatest in the award's history. The result has once again reignited football's biggest debate as who will be called as the greatest player of all time.

RONALDO BEATS MESSI TO WIN INAUGURAL BOAT AWARD - WHAT IS IT?

Ronaldo's first Ballon d’Or victory in 2008 has been voted the greatest individual Ballon d’Or-winning campaign of all time. The newly introduced Ballon d’Or of All Time (BOAT) award was created to recognize the most memorable triumph among players who have won the prestigious individual honor multiple times.

Unlike the conventional Ballon d’Or that awards individual performances in a particular season, this unique award gave football fans the chance to relive some of the best individual seasons in the history of football.

Voting commenced on October 1, 2026, and ended on October 27. The fans had to pay one Euro in order to vote and could participate in a draw for tickets to the 2027 Ballon d'Or Gala. Interestingly, there is no physical trophy attached to the award. It is a fan-voted recognition rather than another official Ballon d’Or title.

Ronaldo's 2008 campaign finished first, while Messi's extraordinary 2012 season secured second place. Ronaldo also claimed third position for his 2017 Ballon d’Or triumph. The results were dominated by the two football icons, with their individual winning campaigns occupying the first 12 positions.

The outcome gives Ronaldo bragging rights in this particular contest, although it does not settle the wider GOAT debate between the two legendary forwards.

WHICH CR7 BALLON D’OR WIN WAS VOTED THE GREATEST?

The 2007-08 season is destined to be remembered by Manchester United fans as one of their most memorable seasons due to the exploits of Ronaldo. The young winger, who was just 23 years old back then, delivered one of his best seasons under the tutelage of the great Sir Alex Ferguson.

According to Sports Illustrated, Ronaldo scored 42 goals in all competitions as Manchester United managed to win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League double.

He was particularly devastating in the Premier League, scoring 31 goals to claim the Golden Boot. He continued his great run in the European competition, where he registered eight goals and two assists in 11 Champions League appearances.

One of the most outstanding moments in his career was when he scored against Chelsea during the 2008 Champions League Final in Moscow. Ronaldo scored first through a header before Chelsea levelled. Manchester United finally won the cup after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Ronaldo not only won the European Golden Shoe but also claimed his first Ballon d’Or award ahead of Messi and Fernando Torres owing to his incredible performances. It also marked the beginning of Ronaldo's remarkable collection of five Ballon d’Or awards.

Since joining Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009, he has collected four more Ballon d’Or honors in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. In less than two decades, fans have chosen to recognize his 2008 success as the best Ballon d’Or winner of all time.

But the second position secured by Messi is no less significant. The performance of the Argentine player in the 2012 season is legendary as he scored a fantastic 91 goals in one calendar year.

Despite that remarkable achievement, voters preferred Ronaldo's combination of individual brilliance and major team trophies in 2008.

MESSI VS RONALDO: FULL BOAT RANKINGS REVEALED AS LEGENDS MISS OUT

The very first edition saw participation from football’s greats such as Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Franz Beckenbauer, Ronaldo Nazario and Alfredo Di Stefano. However, none could challenge the supremacy of Messi and Ronaldo in the top rankings.

Former Brazilian player, Ronaldo Nazario's 2002 victory ranks 13th to emerge as the first winner from outside the Messi-Ronaldo era.

The news follows the crowning of English player Harry Kane with the 2026 men's Ballon d’Or. This BOAT award serves as yet another milestone in the remarkable career of Ronaldo.

For Messi supporters, however, the argument remains far from over. With eight Ballon d’Or awards and a record-breaking 2012 campaign, the Argentine still has plenty of achievements supporting his claim to football's greatest individual distinction.

Ultimately, this fan vote has crowned Ronaldo's 2008 season the favorite, but the debate of who is football's true GOAT remains open.
