There was a battle for the Boston Celtics' final two-way spot, and guard Devin Carter won out.
The Boston Celtics used preseason play to decide which young player would earn the Green Team's final two-way contract. Guard Devin Carter prevailed, and he only needed a single preseason outing to do so.
Carter recorded 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals during Boston's preseason opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, October 8. An untimely illness ruled Carter out for the next three preseason contests, yet the C's must have seen enough versus the Cavs and during training camp. The former Providence College standout officially had his Exhibit 10 contract converted to a two-way deal on Saturday morning, per Mike Scotto of HoopsHype.
Although Carter didn't get as many minutes as some of the other Celtics fighting for that two-way spot, he made the most of his limited opportunity. Plus, he already had more NBA experience than his competitors, as he entered a combined 74 games over two seasons with the Sacramento Kings.
However, the Kings ultimately traded Carter away to the Atlanta Hawks at the end of June. Two months later, Carter was waived, jeopardizing his future in the NBA.
The Celtics are hoping the Kings and Hawks made a mistake by giving up on the scrappy 24-year-old. Carter can attack the basket, dish it under pressure, and hold his own on defense. His 3-point shot needs some work, but that's an area where the Celtics' development staff thrives.
Now Carter will try to upgrade his two-way contract to a full-time deal. The former first-round pick should have plenty of time to shine in the G League with the Maine Celtics and may get called up to Boston on occasion to aid the parent club.
