El clásico remains one of the most important fixtures in world soccer, with Sunday’s encounter at the Camp Nou highly anticipated as a fixture that could set the tone for the rest of the La Liga season.

Domestically, Barcelona are in frightening form. While the Catalans were humbled by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, they are setting a perfect pace at the top of La Liga having won all nine of their fixtures so far, scoring a ridiculous 39 goals in the process.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have scored eight goals in their last two games. José Mourinho has struggled to find the right balance in his team since returning to the Santiago Bernabéu, but Los Blancos may have peaked at the right time to take on their fiercest rivals.

What to watch for

Watching Barcelona is a good time. That has been the case in all three of Flick’s seasons in charge of the Catalan side, but the dial has been turned even higher this season, illustrated by Barça’s tally of 50 goals in 12 games in all competitions.

Barcelona’s high defensive line remains the weak spot, but that same line makes their high-risk, high-energy approach possible. The high-wire act has made Barça the most watchable team in Europe.

Real Madrid have the talent to go toe-to-toe with Barcelona, but perhaps not the cohesion and structure to sustain a performance for 90 minutes. The visitors’ best opportunities will surely come on the counterattack where they carry real threat.

Player to watch: Lamine Yamal, Barcelona – The day before the teenager’s potential crowning as a Ballon d’Or winner, Yamal has the opportunity to prove why he is the best player in the world. The 19-year-old could dominate Sunday’s match.
