Michael Carrick can’t do much right currently, but even one thing that was appreciated by the fans has been flagged by Roy Keane.

The script was flipped at Man Utd when reports emerged that Michael Carrick is not going anywhere, at least for the Chelsea game.

The way he exited against Bournemouth, with his lap of honour around Old Trafford, was widely taken as a sign of him saying goodbye to the Man Utd fans.

He was cheered by the fans and then the players were booed, but Roy Keane doesn’t understand why Carrick put himself in a no-win situation.

The show of support for Carrick from matchgoing fans even seemed to have caught the owners by surprise, and played a part in him keeping his job.

The fans clearly know that the issues don’t start and stop with Carrick, and it’s about time that people above him in the hierarchy are called out.

TalkingPoints

'Back him big time'… Manchester United have been told to support Michael Carrick long-term – and not just week-to-week Commentator Ian Darke says United's show of faith in Carrick does not go far enough – What should the club do?

Having said that, Roy Keane believes that Carrick had no need to do that lap of honour after the Bournemouth defeat, unless he had been told by then that this would be his last game.

If he wasn’t, then it puts him in an awkward situation of having to take training as usual after effectively saying goodbye to the fans.

Now, the players have mentally checked out, he needs to get some energy from somewhere, and if he stays, that moment’s importance has been rendered useless.

Keane said [via The Overlap]: “I thought that effectively was a farewell lap. It felt like it to me. Listen, I don’t get all that. I don’t know why managers do that. But that seems to be the part of the moment. Lots of managers.”

Neville agreed that Carrick’s actions were effectively a public resignation, adding, “He walked around that pitch, and it was effectively a public resignation.”

Ineos then upended expectations in the worst possible manner by keeping him for a game as tough as Chelsea, without backing him publicly.

This just adds to the uncertainty, and Carrick could have certainly avoided playing his part in it by not doing a farewell lap if his future hadn’t been confirmed by then.
