The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams, and college football fans have reacted accordingly.

The College Football Playoff – the knockout-style tournament which has determined each season’s national champion since 2014 – is set to expand from 12 to 24 teams.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, “the new format will begin in 2027 and is expected to come together in the near future, pending final approvals.”

Fans opposed to such expansion have already begun to sound off on social media, calling the new CFP format “the death of bowl games as we know it,” one X user wrote.
