Celtic Boost as Star Available for Benfica Clash after Weekend Illness

Auston Trusty is available for Celtic’s Europa League meeting with Benfica after returning to full training.

The American international was named among the substitutes for Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Motherwell but did not feature at Fir Park.

Martin O’Neill subsequently revealed that Trusty had returned from international duty feeling unwell following a demanding period of travel with the United States.

The defender was consequently given the opportunity to recover as Liam Scales and Dane Murray started in central defence.

Trusty was back on the training pitch at Celtic Park on Wednesday morning before the squad travelled to Portugal.

Asked whether he was available for selection against Benfica, O’Neill provided a simple response: “Yes.” [TCW]

His return is particularly important after the Celtic manager confirmed that Cameron Carter-Vickers will miss Thursday night’s game with a hamstring strain.

Trusty is now a strong contender to enter the starting XI at the Estádio da Luz.

The 28-year-old could partner Scales at the heart of Celtic’s defence, bringing additional pace and physicality against a dangerous Benfica attack.

Murray performed well at Motherwell and will also hope to retain his place, giving O’Neill a decision to make before kick-off.

Carter-Vickers’ absence remains a major setback, but Trusty’s recovery ensures Celtic have an experienced international defender ready to step in.

The Hoops will need him at his best as they attempt to collect their first points of the Europa League campaign in Lisbon.
