Yetton left frustrated by Truro's FA Cup exit at Sutton United
Ben Starkie thanks the Truro City supporters who made the trip to South London.

TRURO City assistant boss Stewart Yetton felt the Tinners ‘should have got something out of the game’ as they bowed of this year’s FA Cup 1-0 at National League outfit Sutton United on Saturday.

The Tinners – bidding to reach the first round proper for only the second time in their history – headed to their former EFL hosts fourth in the National League South standings, while the hosts, who Truro played twice last season, were mid-table in the league above.

Visiting boss John Askey, who had seen his side defeat Merthyr Town and Cirencester Town in earlier rounds, made four changes from the side that won 2-1 at Braintree Town the week before.

Skipper Connor Riley-Lowe and striker Tyler Harvey were both injured, centre-half Max Kinsey was ill and winger Tom Tweedy dropped to the bench as the quartet of Shaun Donnellan, Ryan Law, Jack Stretton and Yassine En-Neyah all came in. However, the latter was injured in the warm-up which gave a chance to attacker Ben Starkie.

In front of over 100 City fans hoping for a repeat of their run to the first round back in 2017, it was the Yellows that started the brighter, including Temi Babalola heading wide after 25 minutes.

However, he turned provider seven minutes later to score the game’s only goal, setting up Emmanuel Osadebe who fired in off the post from distance.

Truro responded quickly with Stretton forcing home stopper Spike Brits into action following a long throw, but it was after the break that the Cornishmen really started to up the ante.

Luke Jephcott saw a free-kick headed behind by Babalola before Stretton short narrowly wide after the Manchester City loanee spilled a ball into the box.

Truro could have been further behind when Omar Mussa shot in, only to be denied by the offside flag, but try as the Tinners might to force a replay, Sutton held on despite Jephcott shooting at Brits, much to the disappointment of Yetton.

He said: “I think we should have got something out of the game. We had a couple of really good chances, one in the first half from a few yards out and then Luke Jephcott has a really good chance at the end and just goes right into the one place the keeper can save it.

“I’m very disappointed because the first half we were probably off a little bit, but I think the conditions played into that. They were the better team first half and I felt we were the better team second half.”

Truro’s cause wasn’t helped by key absences, but Yetton felt they should have done more.

He continued: “Three or four of the lads have also been unwell over the last seven to 10 days going back to the Farnham game, so we’ve been managing that and trying to get through that – Max Kinsey’s not here either, he’s been unwell and thought he was over it, but it’s come on again.

“We’ve got a little bit of sickness in the camp, but we’ve also got injuries and it might be a factor as to why we've got a couple injuries as well, you know with the illness, so it’s been a challenge and obviously with a lot of away games back-to-back with the travel, it has been difficult. But that’s no excuse for today, we were still strong and overall we should have got something out of the game.”

TRURO CITY: Stone; W Dean (capt), Harrison (Tweedy, 78), Donnellan, Starkie, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jephcott, Law, Greenslade (Bell, 67), Stretton, T Dean. Subs not used: Lavercombe (gk), Blake, Nunn.
