The full-back was made to wait for his debut for the club due to injury

Chelsea loanee Landon Emenalo has had a less-than-ideal start to his time with Celtic. The full-back joined the Scottish champions late in the summer transfer window, but has had to wait to make his debut

He was part of Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea squad during pre=season, impressing with his performances. But the arrival of Pep Chavarria allowed him to go out on loan in search of more regular game time.

After undergoing rehab for his injury with Chelsea, the 18-year-old joined up with Celtic last week. He was named on the bench for Saturday’s home match against Hearts.

The full-back was given a chance to catch the eye in the final 30 minutes of the game, with Celtic 6-1 up. He helped his new side to an impressive 7-1 victory.

Despite the result, there were some concerns over Emenalo’s performance. Taking to social media, Celtic fans gave their thoughts on his cameo, with some giving a harsh assessment.

“Emenalo looks like it might be Xmas before he gets match fit. Quite the loan move,” one fan said.

A second added: “Emenalo looks like he’s on his first week of couch to 5k”

“Needs time to get sharp, still looks a step behind,” said a third.

There were, however, some slightly different views, with one fan in particular adding some context. “Not made the same first impression as Mheuka did but theres plenty of time,” they said. “In the context of what it was, theres zero judgement at this stage but the game did pass Emenalo by tbf.”

A second said: “Thought the boy Emenalo looked decent when he came on yesterday. Cool barnet anaw.”

Fellow Chelsea loanee Shim Mheuka was an unused substitute for the game. The striker has come on in the closing stages of the match for all the previous five Scottish Premiership games, but is yet to score for the club.

Speaking about his arrival at Celtic last week, Emenaldo told the club’s official website: “It's really an honour to be here, especially after all this time.

“It felt good to train today and meet the guys. It's a good group. So I can't wait to get started.

“Obviously, I know Shim from Chelsea, so it's nice to know someone here, but they've all welcomed me in, so it's been pretty easy to join. Since he's joined, I've been watching, been rooting for him, obviously. I think he's done well, and I've known him since under-15s.
