With just five rounds remaining in the MotoGP 2026 season, Jorge Martin leads the championship by a razor-thin margin of two points over Marc Marquez, while Marco Bezzecchi looms as a formidable third contender, trailing by 46 points. Aprilia ambassador Max Biaggi has sounded the alarm and offered sharp insights into the evolving title battle, emphasizing the rising threat posed not only by Marquez but also by Bezzecchi’s resurgence, which could disrupt the duel at the summit.

Martin currently tops the standings with 355 points, closely pursued by Marquez on 353, and Bezzecchi holding third with 309. On paper, the championship fight seems to be a two-horse race between Martin and Marquez. However, Biaggi warns against underestimating Bezzecchi, whose late-season form last year demonstrated his capacity to overturn significant deficits. “It’s a magnificent championship, perhaps one of the best,” Biaggi told La Gazzetta Motori, praising Aprilia’s progress and the fact that the manufacturer fields two title-capable riders. Yet, he remains mindful of the challenge Ducati represents, noting, “Ducati is always strong, the reigning world champion is still there, and Marquez is the most formidable rider.”

Biaggi also pointed to Aprilia’s own mistakes as a factor tightening the championship race. “Aprilia contributed to the closeness of the standings with some small errors and that huge mistake when Martin collided with Bezzecchi,” he remarked. This incident was more than a lost race outcome; it inflicted mutual damage on Aprilia’s two leading riders, amplifying the cost of internal clashes in such a high-stakes fight. The ambassador underlines that while having two contenders is a strategic advantage, “the challenge is ensuring they don’t neutralize each other.”

Bezzecchi’s predicament is clear: 46 points behind Martin and 44 adrift of Marquez, he cannot afford to play safe. Yet his recent results offer cause for optimism. After Marquez’s 2025 season was cut short, Bezzecchi surged with victories in the Australian Sprint, Portugal GP, and Valencia GP—three circuits that remain on the 2026 calendar. Alongside his recent Indonesian win, which capped an Aprilia one-two-three-four finish, Bezzecchi’s momentum is undeniable. While not the outright favourite, his deficit does not rule him out with 185 points still available over the final five rounds.

Strategically, the three contenders face divergent tasks. Martin’s priority is to defend his slim lead without succumbing to overly cautious riding. Marquez must claw back at least three points to overtake Martin while keeping a wary eye on Bezzecchi’s charge. For Bezzecchi, the mandate is aggressive: he must attack relentlessly, capitalize on circuits where he has proven strengths like Phillip Island, Portimão, and Valencia, and hope for missteps from his rivals.

Aprilia now confronts a critical dilemma: how long can it permit its two riders to pursue their championship ambitions independently before intervening if one gains a decisive upper hand? This internal balancing act will be crucial in the final stages.

Biaggi’s perspective crystallizes the gravity of the situation. Marquez remains a daunting adversary, Bezzecchi has shown he can finish seasons with a flourish, and Martin is the man everyone else must beat. With only two points separating the top two and a third challenger closing fast, Aprilia stands on the brink of a historic title. However, the Italian marque must avoid repeating costly errors that see its own stars fighting each other rather than their rivals.

The 2026 MotoGP title chase is a powder keg ready to explode—and Aprilia’s decisions in these final rounds could determine whether it ascends to glory or watches its championship dreams unravel.
