Tilak Varma-starrer India have made a strong start to their T20I series against New Zealand, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead despite having limited time to adapt to the conditions. The team travelled to New Zealand just four days after completing their home series against the West Indies, leaving little room for rest or preparation between assignments.

Amid the demanding schedule, Tilak Varma has revealed the message head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered to the players. Gambhir emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the tour, with the team's performances in T20Is expected to create momentum for the upcoming ODI and Test series.

Tilak Varma opens up on Gautam Gambhir's warning to Team India

India's packed international calendar has required players to move quickly between countries, formats and playing conditions. The transition from the West Indies series to New Zealand presented another challenge, but the players have responded by winning the first three T20Is and securing the series.

Tilak Varma acknowledged that the demands of international cricket leave little room for excuses over fatigue. He believes the squad must continue performing at the highest level and set an example for younger players who aspire to represent India.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the fourth T20I, the left-handed batter explained that Gautam Gambhir had made the team's responsibilities clear during meetings. The coach wants India to use the T20I series as a foundation for the remainder of the tour, which also includes five ODIs and two Tests.

“At this level, we cannot make excuses. We are at the highest level, and we need to set standards for the youngsters who look up to us," Tilak Varma said.

He added that Gambhir had reminded the players that their approach in the shortest format could influence the teams competing in the other formats.

“Gautam sir (head coach Gautam Gambhir) made it clear in team meetings that this is a long tour and the standard we set as a T20 side will provide momentum for the ODI and Test squads."

Tilak Varma speaks on dynamic with Shreyas Iyer

Tilak Varma also discussed his working relationship with captain Shreyas Iyer and how their communication helps the team on the field. Rather than leaving every decision to the captain, the batter explained that he contributes by sharing observations and assisting with smaller responsibilities during matches. He stated:

"As captain, it becomes tough to cover every single detail alone. So Iyer and I share concise communication; we discuss areas where I can assist him, and he asks for inputs too. Taking on those small roles on the field is something I'm enjoying, and this combination is delivering positive results."

With India already leading 3-0, the focus has now shifted towards completing a clean sweep in the five-match series. Tilak Varma said the players were treating the remaining matches as an opportunity to finish the assignment on a high note.

“We are thinking this is a great opportunity to achieve a clean sweep. The next goal is to win the upcoming match and give the Indian crowd a great chance to witness a 5–0 series win," he said.

I am also practising. I am confident, when I get a chance, I will bowl - Tilak Varma ready to contribute with the ball

Tilak Varma further revealed that he has continued working on his bowling despite not having many opportunities to contribute with the ball during the series. India currently have Naman Dhir as an option who has been bowling well, reducing the immediate need to use Tilak.

However, the batter said he remains prepared to contribute whenever the team management requires him to do so.

"As a management, we have spoken (about my bowling) and I have done a lot of work. Now, we have Naman Dhir in the team. He is bowling well, so there is not much use of my bowling. But behind the scenes, I am also practising. I am confident, when I get a chance, I will bowl," he said.
