Whelan 'proud' after Carlisle's big week

Carlisle United midfielder Callum Whelan has admitted to a feeling of pride after a huge eight days in their season.

Carlisle dug deep to come out of a challenging three games with three wins to move to the edge of the National League play-off spots.

The Cumbrians came from a goal down to win at Solihull Moors, they beat Harrogate Town 3-0 at home despite playing over half the game with nine men and then had to come from behind again in a 4-2 victory at Altrincham.

It stretched their unbeaten run to seven games and is a far cry from how the mood was at the start of that period when head coach Rob Elliot was under severe pressure.

"We started the season poorly and we took a bit of stick, rightly so," he told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"Our mission was to show the togetherness we do have. We're a good group, hard-working but it's frustrating if you're not showing that on the weekend.

"But I'm so proud of the boys this week. People can see the togetherness is real and the team spirit, and that's the fans included. I'm dead proud of everyone."

Whelan scored against both Harrogate and Altrincham and admits that after the energy-sapping heroics at Brunton Park, there was a determination not to have a letdown less than 72 hours later.

The midfielder equalised just before the break and then a strong second-half showing at Moss Rose secured the three points.

"The chat before the game was that Wednesday was a great night, but we're Carlisle, we're winners and we want to be successful in this league," he added.

"The mentality was we have to come here and perform and get a result.

"We started quite poorly, we looked a bit tired and leggy but to show the character we did, it's a real credit to the football club."
