Man Utd imploded in Como on Wednesday night, leaving massive question marks over the future of head coach Michael Carrick.
It was not only the result and the performance, but also the post-match interview from captain Bruno Fernandes that clearly showed there has been a fallout between him and the manager.
From the outside looking in, Carrick’s position looks untenable. The nature of the display in Italy was concerning enough, but the fact that the club’s talisman is openly questioning his tactics suggests something has to give.
Press the next page as we give our Man Utd player ratings for the 4-1 defeat to Como…
RB – Diogo Dalot – 4/10 – missed an early chance to put United 1-0 up, and things steadily deteriorated from there.
CB – Matthijs de Ligt – 3/10 – he hasn’t played for 11 months, so what do you expect? He struggled to keep pace with Como forward Anastasios Douvikas, who had the beating of him all night before finally scoring just after half-time.
CB – Harry Maguire – 2/10 – simply terrible. Stood off Paz for Como’s opener, before losing Jacobo Ramon for the home team’s fourth.
LB – Noussair Mazraoui – 3/10 – the defender was caught out of position for the opening goal and was poor in possession.
CM – Mason Mount – 4/10 – to be frank, the 27-year-old looked lost. It’s not ideal that he was thrown into a team devoid of any confidence, but he didn’t do himself any favours with this performance.
AM – Youri Tielemans – 4/10 – the fact is, the Belgian can’t cover ground due to his lack of pace/fitness.
Como exposed Tielemans on the counter-attack on several occasions. You do wonder where he fits into this team, considering his obvious limitations.
CF – Bruno Fernandes – 3/10 – even before the post-match interview, it was clear from the captain’s actions on the pitch that he has no faith in Carrick or his tactics.
Fernandes was mostly berating his teammates for failing to press, whilst doing absolutely nothing on the ball.
LW – Matheus Cunha – 4/10 – the Brazilian’s attitude is a huge concern. Just watch how he didn’t track Nico Paz for the opener.
Carlos Baleba – 2/10 – booked for a foul on Lucas Da Cunha before giving the ball away to Paz for Como’s third goal. Woeful.
Joshua Zirkzee – 7/10 – based on this display, the Dutchman should have started. Held up the ball well before showing good composure to put away the consolation goal.
Harry Amass – 5/10 – it was the worst of circumstances to come on as a substitute. The fullback didn’t do anything wrong.
Shea Lacey – 4/10 – replaced Mbeumo late on and duly got himself a yellow card.
