Mental Mika Baur Moment Clipped up by BBC

Mika Baur’s late sprint to stop a Dundee United break has been picked up by BBC Sport Scotland, and the BBC Sportsound commentary of the moment is doing the rounds this morning.

The clip, posted on BBC Sport Scotland’s X account, shows a Celtic corner breaking down late in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Celtic Park. Abdoulaye Yoro picked up the loose ball and was away, with nobody holding the halfway line.

Baur was the Celtic player who turned and chased. With him closing in, the United man slowed, cut back and the attack fizzled out. Celtic Park applauded the late burst from Baur to save Celtic’s blushes.

All the upcoming Celtic fixtures are on our fixtures page.

The BBC Sportsound commentator was enjoying it. “Here’s a chance for United, and away! He’s running the full length of the park, he’s got to go the whole way…”

Then, as Baur closed in: “It’s Baur that’s chasing him, it’s no Linford Christie!”

Christie won Olympic 100m gold in 1992, so anyone under 40 might need to look that one up.

Baur’s night

Baur played the full 90 minutes and made three tackles, according to our match data, in a game Celtic dominated without being able to win.

Camilo Durán put Celtic ahead after 18 minutes before Zachary Sapsford and Neil Farrugia scored three minutes apart for United. Liam Scales headed the equaliser after the break, and Celtic finished with 29 shots to United’s 11 but only a point to show for it.

Who was minding the shop?

Credit to Baur. He’d played every minute and still got back, when plenty of players would have stood and watched.

But the clip also shows something O’Neill should be worried about. When Celtic send bodies forward for a corner, somebody has to stay on the halfway line in case it breaks down. Nobody did, and it was left to Baur to chase back and cover for it. Colby Donovan is usually tasked with doing so but he was down at the corner flag and not one of his teammates clocked it.

For me, it’s another sign this team isn’t being coached to the level you’d expect from Celtic. That kind of cover is basic, and it shouldn’t come down to one player’s lungs. Hopefully it’s been sorted at Lennoxtown before Sunday’s trip to Falkirk.
