Jones also represented Wales at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Jamaica in the 100 yard, 220 yard and squad relay races.
A product of Ystalyfera Grammar School, Jones played for Neath before joining Cardiff in 1966 ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
After the Games, Jones won his first international cap in 1967 against New Zealand, a game in which Wales narrowly lost 13-6.
Jones scored tries against Scotland and France during the 1968 Five Nations, his form good enough to earn a spot on the British and Irish Lions' tour of South Africa.
But he missed the first two weeks of the tour with a hamstring, the same injury which would impact the rest of his career.
The wing did score during the tour of South Africa, touching down a try against South-Western Districts.
Jones made the switch to rugby league at the age of 23, joining Wigan and turning professional.
He played 57 times for Wigan, scoring 38 tries, and was called up to the Wales rugby league squad in 1970.
Jones also made the 19-man Great Britain squad for the 1970 World Cup campaign, scoring tries against France and New Zealand during the tournament.
At the age of 26, Jones was forced to retire from playing due to recurring hamstring problems.
The Welsh Rugby Union and former clubs Cardiff and Neath paid tribute to Jones and offered condolences to his family.
