BBC pundit was really puzzled by what one Chelsea star did against Liverpool

Chelsea took the lead in their penalty shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

They went ahead in the 40th minute through a Morgan Rogers penalty, which was awarded after a foul on Moises Caicedo. However, they were not in front for long.

Cody Gakpo swiftly equalised after Liverpool were handed their own spot-kick shortly afterwards. It would have really frustrated Xabi Alonso, given how avoidable it was.

Clinton Morrison puzzled by Wesley Fofana’s handball

Liverpool were awarded their penalty after a handball from Wesley Fofana, and former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison could just not believe the central defender’s hand was up in the air.

Commentating on the game for the BBC, Morrison said: “It was a mistake from Fofana. I don’t know why his hand is in the air.”

Ex-Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux was also very critical of Fofana’s handball. Speaking on Sky, he said: “I cannot believe it. You look for things. Is he being pushed? Is he being tugged around?

“No he’s not, he’s leaning into his player and then flaps his right hand at the player. It’s such a critical time after Chelsea went in front against the run of play.”

Fofana was making his first start in a while after losing his place in the team to Josh Acheampong. The Frenchman, who missed the decisive spot-kick, had a disappointing night at Anfield but could retain his spot in the side for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Maxence Lacroix had to be withdrawn in the first half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. It is another injury setback for Alonso, who was already without Joao Pedro.

Pedro missed the trip to Anfield as well as last Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Alonso has several options to replace Pedro, but the Brazilian is the Blues’ top scorer in the Premier League and his absence has certainly been felt.
