Cole Palmer will be able to play against Manchester United for Chelsea(Image: Chelsea FC via Getty Images)
Manchester United will still have to face Cole Palmer when they play Chelsea in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Halloween.
Palmer was sent off in their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur after being issued two yellow cards within the space of nine second-half minutes. Such a red card results in an automatic one-match suspension, with United being the Blues' next league opponents, but that is not their next domestic match.
Chelsea are still in the Carabao Cup and play their fourth-round tie against Liverpool at Anfield this midweek. Therefore, that is the match Palmer will be suspended for.
The suspensions from red cards issued in the Premier League also apply to matches in both domestic cup competitions and vice versa. Only bans due to yellow card accumulation are limited to league games, as they are in UEFA competitions.
Xabi Alonso could conceivably have rested Palmer in midweek anyway. The Chelsea head coach did so by naming his player among the substitutes in their third-round tie against Leeds United.
However, with the Blues losing 1-0 at half-time, the midfielder was brought on for the second half. Palmer scored twice within three minutes to turn the tie around, winning 6-3.

Much like Leeds, United led 2-0 in their third-round tie with Brighton & Hove Albion. Mason Mount and Shea Lacey scored within 43 seconds of each other to put the hosts ahead at Old Trafford inside nine minutes.
Charalampos Kostoulas halved the deficit in the first minute of added time before half-time. Maxim De Cuyper and Pascal Gross then scored midway through the second 45 to complete their comeback.
It was the first time in half a century that United had lost a home match after leading by two goals. The last was against Spurs back in the 1976/77 season.
As a result, they will have their first midweek without a match since the international break as they prepare to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. They are one of only seven Premier League clubs already out of the Carabao Cup, with Bradford City, Fleetwood Town and Peterborough United the three remaining English Football League clubs.
Notably, every Championship team is eliminated after three rounds. Bradford and Posh play in League One, with Fleetwood representing League Two.
Coventry City, Hull City, Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Spurs are the other teams already eliminated. All six, plus United, lost to fellow top-flight teams.
