Sir Elton is used to making an impact at Watford, having overseen the most successful period in the club's history, but even he may have been taken aback by the size of the storm his comments after last weekend's 4-0 home defeat against Burnley caused.

At the time, he expressed sorrow, saying, "I really feel for the supporters who have to watch this".

It caused an avalanche of comments from what felt like anybody who has ever been connected to the club, or passed through Watford Junction, with conversation shifting to focus on the club's ownership.

Gino Pozzo met with Roy Moore, founder of the 1881 Movement, after he published an open letter of no confidence in Pozzo's ownership of the club, to address fans' concerns.

That meeting was published in full, days after a 5-1 defeat at Cardiff, and was overwhelmingly criticised, only adding to the storm the club found itself at the centre of.

After recent thrashings against Burnley and Cardiff, few gave Watford a chance against Charlton, but head coach Alessio Dionisi had been insistent that he expected a reaction from his side.

That reaction arrived and was significant. The performance that accompanied Watford's 2-0 win over the Addicks was a huge turnaround from Tuesday, and indicative of a team stood firmly in their manager's corner, ready to fight for him.

Sir Elton was quick to make his praise of the performance as clear as his criticism was last week, and took to Instagram to share his delight.

"That's more like it, boys," he wrote. "Congratulations! Onwards and upwards 🚀."

Captain Mattie Pollock, who is understood to have led the squad's defence of Dionisi in a meeting with club staff last Sunday, also commented, urging the squad to keep pushing forward.

Watford now have a week before their next game, away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where they will hope to build on today's newfound positive momentum.
