Ruben Amorim’s positive start to life as AC Milan head coach continued with a 3-2 win over Atalanta at San Siro on Sunday.
Milan were in a very commanding position with an hour on the clock. Goncalo Ramos converted a penalty, Adrien Rabiot netted his fourth of the season and Mario Gila scored his first goal for the club to give Ruben Amorim’s side a three-goal lead.
However, they nearly let it slip in the final 25 minutes. Gianluca Gaetano got Atalanta back into it and Nikola Krstovic made it a one-goal game with not long to go, but the Rossoneri hung on for their fourth win in seven Serie A games.
Milan recorded more possession in the game, but their 56% could have been higher if it weren’t for the very passive approach taken in the final 20-25 minutes.
The Rossoneri did generate comfortably more Expected Goals, with 2.41 to Atalanta’s 1.65. However, a large amount of that will have been from the two penalties, one of which Goncalo Ramos missed.
La Dea had more big chances (4 to 3), more total shots (12 to 11) but less shots on target (6 to 4). It is certainly one of the more open games seen at San Siro since… Inter’s 4-3 loss to Club Brugge in midweek.

Adrien Rabiot has been involved in a goal for four matches in a row for the first time in his career in the ‘top five’ European leagues. The last midfielder to achieve this with Milan in Serie A was Hakan Çalhanoglu in December 2020.
Ruben Amorim (4W, 3D) has become the third coach in Milan history to remain unbeaten in each of his first seven matches in Serie A, after Hector Puricelli in 1955 (3W, 4D) and Luis Carniglia in 1963 (4W, 3D).
It was the first time that Amorim has beaten Atalanta as a head coach. His four previous meetings with them all came with Sporting CP in the Europa League, yielding two draws and two defeats.
Atalanta had gotten the better of Milan of late before last night, as they were unbeaten in the last six Serie A matches between the two teams.
The win for Milan was their first against Atalanta in the league since February 2023. The Orobici during that period had outscored the Rossoneri with 11 goals for and seven against.
The Orobici had been looking to reverse a three-match away winless streak. The last time they earned a win in a Serie A away game was May 10 against Milan.
Maurizio Sarri has now faced Milan on 22 occasions as a head coach in his career, recording eight wins, six draws and nine defeats.
