Karlsruher SC and SV Darmstadt 98 meet on Sunday afternoon with both sides desperate to improve their fortunes, although the pressure is considerably greater on the hosts. Karlsruhe begin the weekend 17th in the 2. Bundesliga table with just five points from their opening seven matches, while Darmstadt sit 14th with seven points.

With both clubs searching for consistency, the encounter represents an important opportunity to gain ground on their rivals and move away from the relegation places.

Karlsruhe have endured a miserable start to the campaign under new head coach Maximilian Senft. Five points from seven games, coupled with a goal difference of 6-14, have left the Baden-Württemberg side firmly in the bottom three. Their struggles have been particularly pronounced at home, where three consecutive defeats have increased the pressure ahead of Sunday’s fixture.

KSC's most recent outing brought another disappointing result, as they lost 2-0 away to FC St. Pauli. Despite showing periods of promise, Karlsruhe were unable to find a way through and returned home empty-handed, extending their winless run in the league to five matches.

Their home form is an even greater concern. Defeats against Nürnberg, Energie Cottbus and Wolfsburg have left Karlsruhe searching for their first home win since the opening week of the season, while their defensive problems have seen them concede 14 goals in seven league fixtures.

Senft has nevertheless insisted that belief remains within the club, pointing to a positive training week and the importance of maintaining a clear approach rather than making wholesale tactical changes.

“It’s about really knowing the players and reaching them emotionally at the right moments. The lads aren’t robots. I can’t simply enter ABC and expect DEF to come out,” the KSC coach explained ahead of the match.

The Austrian has also called for his players to keep working hard and learn from recent setbacks, rather than allowing the disappointing results to undermine their confidence. With the support of the home crowd expected to be crucial, Karlsruhe will hope that Sunday’s encounter can provide the turning point their season desperately needs.

The hosts will also take encouragement from their most recent meeting with Darmstadt. Karlsruhe claimed a 2-1 victory in May, with captain Marvin Wanitzek opening the scoring directly from a free kick before Shio Fukuda struck a late winner. Senft’s side will be hoping for a repeat performance as they attempt to end their current slump.

Darmstadt, meanwhile, arrive in Karlsruhe looking to build on an encouraging run of results. Florian Kohfeldt’s side have collected seven points from their opening seven matches, with two wins, one draw and four defeats leaving them 14th in the table.

Die Lilien endured a difficult opening to the season, but recent performances have offered signs of improvement. Their latest outing saw them come from behind to beat Energie Cottbus 3-1 at home, with Noah Weißhaupt equalising before Aleksandar Vukotić and a late goal from Yannik Lührs completed the turnaround.

That victory was particularly important after a difficult run of fixtures, providing Kohfeldt’s players with renewed confidence ahead of a challenging away trip. Darmstadt have now won two of their last three league matches, and they will be eager to translate their improved form into a first away victory of the campaign.

The visitors’ attacking play has begun to show greater cohesion, with Weißhaupt and Milan Smit emerging as important contributors in the final third. Their movement and ability to exploit space could prove valuable against a Karlsruhe defence that has struggled to keep opponents at bay.

Kohfeldt has acknowledged the quality of the hosts despite their position in the table, warning that Karlsruhe’s personnel and more aggressive approach make them a dangerous opponent.

“We’re facing a team with a great deal of individual quality. Marcel Franke is a very experienced centre-back, while Wanitzek, Ben Farhat and Egloff give them considerable technical quality in midfield,” the Darmstadt coach said.

He also highlighted the changes in Karlsruhe’s style under Senft, noting that they press higher up the pitch and look to create turnovers before attacking quickly. Darmstadt will therefore need to remain composed in possession and avoid giving the hosts opportunities to build momentum.

The Darmstadt boss has also dismissed concerns surrounding the team’s away form, insisting that the players remain confident in their ability to reproduce their football on the road. Sunday’s fixture provides an opportunity to demonstrate that belief against an opponent whose home struggles could make them vulnerable if the visitors establish control early.

Historically, the fixture has produced some entertaining encounters with 17 goals scored in the last five meetings, while Karlsruhe’s 2-1 victory in May will still be fresh in the minds of both squads.

With Karlsruhe desperate to end their losing run at the BBBank Wildpark and Darmstadt seeking their first away win of the campaign, Sunday’s contest has the potential to be a pivotal encounter for both sides. The hosts must improve defensively and find greater cutting edge in attack, while the visitors will look to exploit their opponents’ uncertainty and continue their recent upward trajectory.
