King's Lynn Soccer Club got back to winning ways in the Norfolk Junior Cup second round with a hard-fought 3-1 victory away at Blofield Reserves.
The win ended a frustrating run of results and gives the squad a much-needed confidence boost.
After a few weeks in which things had not quite gone KLSC’s way in the league, including back-to-back local derby defeats and last week’s abandoned cup fixture, the visitors were determined to get their season back on track.
With players returning from injury and other commitments, the manager made some big calls with his starting line-up, and those decisions would ultimately pay dividends.
The game began end-to-end, with neither side settling into a rhythm during the opening 20 minutes.
Blofield looked to make the most of the slope on their pitch, repeatedly playing balls over the top and causing KLSC problems at the back.
However, as the visitors grew into the contest, chances began to arrive. The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Danny Hazell clipped an excellent ball over the top for Dan Berry to chase.
With the ball looking destined to run out of play, Berry showed tremendous determination to keep it alive before hooking it back into the path of Rudi Stevens, who was making his first start in over a year.
Stevens made no mistake, smashing the ball home to give KLSC a deserved lead.
Unfortunately, the advantage was short-lived. Just minutes later, another ball over the top caught KLSC out, allowing the Blofield Reserves striker to finish well and bring the scores level.
KLSC continued to create opportunities before the break, with a number of chances that perhaps should have resulted in more goals. However, neither side could find another breakthrough, and the teams went into half-time locked at 1-1.
The visitors came out for the second half with renewed purpose, knowing the tie was there for the taking.
Ellis Hardaker and Callum McDermid were introduced at the interval, helping KLSC get on the front foot and put the hosts under increasing pressure.
On the hour mark, Alfie Royal entered the action, and it took him just two minutes to make his mark.
Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, Royal produced a wonderful strike to put KLSC back in front at 2-1 and give the visitors a crucial advantage.
Blofield responded by pushing forward in search of another equaliser, but KLSC dug deep and showed the resilience that had been missing in recent weeks.
Returning goalkeeper Aydin Duran, back after two months out, proved his worth by producing an important one-on-one save to preserve the lead and keep the hosts at bay.
With the game entering its closing stages, KLSC finally put the result beyond doubt in the 85th minute.
Substitute Ellis Hardaker rose superbly to power a header home, sealing a 3-1 victory and sparking celebrations among the travelling side.
Man of the Match: Callum South.
The team travels to Holt Reserves on Saturday, hoping to carry their cup-winning momentum into the league and get their campaign firmly back on track.
