‘Why Not Trade for Saquon Barkley?’ — Mike Florio Fires Up Trade Talk, Telling NFC Heavyweights to Pounce For Eagles All-Pro

As the Philadelphia Eagles grapple with a series of questions over where their season is heading, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio made an interesting pitch on Saturday that is bound to raise a few eyebrows. Florio suggested that with the Eagles losing Jalen Hurts to injured reserve owing to a blood clot, maybe a couple of contenders should check in on swinging a trade for star running back Saquon Barkley.

Mike Florio Makes The Case For Seattle Seahawks To Check In on Saquon Barkley Trade

Florio first floated the move on “PFT Live” on Friday, a day after a 17-14 overtime loss in Denver dropped the defending champions to 3-3. He traced Seattle’s problem to March, when the team chose to re-sign receiver Rashid Shaheed to a three-year, $51 million deal and let Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III leave for a three-year, $43 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Florio made it clear he was making a suggestion, not reporting talks between the teams, and when he first raised it, he described a Barkley deal as the move a team makes if it’s willing to get desperate and fully commit to the running game.

Speaking as if he were running Seattle’s front office, Florio put it plainly: “Why not trade for Saquon Barkley? Why not admit we need a high-end running back to make this offense work? We can’t just snap our fingers and transmogrify Sam Darnold into Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen. Sam Darnold is who he is.”

Darnold won a Super Bowl last year as exactly that quarterback, Florio noted, but he warned that “if we try to get him to do too much and if he tries to do too much, we’re going to continue to get these outcomes where there are a lot of turnovers.”

Those outcomes are already piling up. Darnold threw two interceptions in Denver and was sacked five times. The second pick came on the opening series of overtime and set up Wil Lutz’s 53-yard game-winning field goal.

Through Week 6, Darnold has seven touchdown passes and seven interceptions, a 60.4% completion rate and a 77.4 passer rating, which ranks 27th of 31 qualified quarterbacks. After the game, he took responsibility and said his turnovers weren’t fair to the defense. Darnold’s 69.1 PFN QB Impact Grade ranks #26 in the league through Week 6.

Florio’s answer is a familiar blueprint. He called Seattle’s situation “shades of the Legion of Boom Seahawks all over again,” recalling an era when Russell Wilson kept winning games but “the team was about defense and the running game. It wasn’t everything built around the quarterback.”

The defense is already holding up its end. Seattle held Denver to 168 total yards on Thursday. On the season, it has allowed 3.96 yards per play, the best mark for any defense through six games since 2008, according to Stathead.

Florio Pushes Vikings To Also Consider Saquon Barkley Trade

While Florio made a substantial case for Seattle to check in on a move for Barkley, he also urged the Minnesota Vikings to take a look into a potential move and supercharge their offense.

“Think about the Vikings if they could get Saquon Barkley,” Florio said.

“Think about how that would be a B12 shot to the offense if the running game was powered by Saquon Barkley, with Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones there to complement Saquon Barkley. A team that’s so built on defense and a passing game coming around, and one of the reasons the passing game’s coming around is because the running game has been so good.”

Barkley, however, wouldn’t be a plug-and-play fix for either team. The 2-3 Eagles ruled him out of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with a hamstring injury after he missed all week of practice. Through Week 6, Barkley has 36 carries for 182 yards and no touchdowns, though his 5.1 yards per carry ranks eighth of 43 qualified rushers.

Barkley has a relatively underwhelming 71.9 PFN RB Impact Grade heading into Week 6.

The Nov. 10 trade deadline’s right around the corner, which means teams will look to shake a few trees and see what falls. When it comes to the Eagles front office’s instincts for a good deal, however, it remains to be seen how the speculation pans out.
