Burnley boss Nicky Hayen vows to keep fighting after Wolves loss

The club’s supporters have not seen their team secure three points on their own soil since Leeds were beaten in the Premier League on October 18 last year and they made it clear to owner Alan Pace that they blame him for a poor start to the season which only sees them out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone by superior goal difference.

Jamie Vardy gave Burnley a 20th-minute lead by notching his first goal for the club with a fierce finish.

However, mistakes by captain Kyle Walker and central defender Igor Julio were exploited by Fer Lopez and substitute Tawanda Chirewa as Cesar Peixoto’s side ended a run of two successive defeats by claiming a win that takes Wolves up to sixth place in the table.

Hayen, who succeeded Scott Parker in the summer following relegation from the Premier League, said: “I will not give up. I am not thinking about (the future) because I don’t want to lose energy. That’s a question for other people.

“We played with a lot of courage in the first half, scored one good goal, and could have scored more. But then we made a mistake before half-time and it gave the opponent energy.

“It was more equal in the second half, but Wolves didn’t create many chances until we made another mistake. Then you could feel the atmosphere change in the stands – and I understand why.

“How can I explain individual mistakes? Every mistake we made became a goal. The players have apologised in the dressing room, but they didn’t do it on purpose. We win together and we lose together.

“I understand the fans. They love their club, but I didn’t come here to do harm to the club. I will work hard every day.”

Wolves were second best until Lopez levelled six minutes before half-time after Walker’s error.

Burnley were punished again in the 72nd minute when Igor’s heavy touch led to Chirewa bagging the winner just 23 seconds after being introduced as a substitute.

Peixoto: “Sometimes substitutions don’t work and sometimes they do.

“The important thing is that the players are ready for when they come on. They must have the right mentality to help the team when they came on – and Tawanda showed he has the right mentality.

“It is an important three points, but that’s all it is. I don’t get too sad when we lose and I don’t get too happy when we win.

“This is a difficult stadium and a difficult opponent, but it is still only three points.”
