On this day: Maharaj makes debut at the WACA
Keshav Maharaj

On this day in 2016, Keshav Maharaj marked his Test debut at the WACA by dismissing Steve Smith for a duck, taking 3-56 and and scoring an unbeaten 41.

Maharaj’s first Test wicket was a huge one, trapping Australia captain Steve Smith lbw for a four-ball duck as the hosts were bowled out for 244. The debutant finished with 3-56.

He also made his mark with the bat. After scoring 16 in the first innings (including a six), Maharaj blasted an unbeaten 41 off just 34 balls in the second, including two fours and three sixes.

All three of those second-innings sixes came off Nathan Lyon, while Maharaj had also cleared the ropes once in his first innings. He finished a memorable debut with four wickets as the Proteas claimed a 177-run victory in Perth.
