Mid-major women’s basketball player ties NCAA record with 14 3-pointers

Most people around women’s college basketball had never heard of Chloe Donnell entering this season. The 5-foot-7 guard from Boerne, Texas, appeared in just 11 games for South Alabama last year before transferring this offseason to Northwestern State.

They’ll know her name now. It’s in the NCAA record book.

In a 120-40 victory against non-NCAA affiliated Ecclesia College on Monday, Nov. 2, Donnell came off the bench for Northwestern State to knock down 14 shots from behind the arc, tying the NCAA record for most 3-pointers made in a single game.

Donnell finished with 46 points in 27 minutes, shooting 14-of-23 from 3-point land and 16-of-26 from the floor. She also had four assists and two steals.

“I think we all have that chip on our shoulder of just wanting to come out and prove more,” Donnell said after her record-tying performance. “I’ve just had the mindset of being ready to shoot the ball … It definitely feels really cool. It’s kind of surreal. My teammates set me up for success.

“I just shot the ball well. I don’t have anything else to say … I was feeling it.”

The sophomore tied the record set in 2019 by Juicy Landrum of Baylor, who knocked down 14 shots from deep range against Arkansas State.

To put that in a bit more perspective, consider that Caitlin Clark never made more than nine 3-pointers in a college game.

For Northwestern State — which is based in Natchitoches, Louisiana and plays in the Southland Conference — the victory was also the first for first-year head coach Alan Frey. He was previously a longtime assistant at Tulane, Monmouth and Loyola University New Orleans.

“We have really tried to coach them to be confident and make the right play. I thought that Chloe was doing that, I thought her teammates were doing that. I don’t think she forced bad shots up. We made the right play, she happened to make them,” Frey said. “I haven’t seen one person shoot in a game like that, that I’ve coached.”

Donnell now finds herself at the top of the leaderboard for the highest single-game scorer of the season, eclipsing another impressive opening day performance by Georgia Tech’s Talayah Walker who scored 40 points in a win over Hofstra.

Northwestern State’s next opponents are a bit tougher as they play at Arkansas on Friday, Nov. 6 before traveling to Oklahoma State on Monday, Nov. 9.

Donnell will likely be at the top of the scouting report for the Demons’ next opponents.
