Rohit Sharma has started to unfold many of his life incidents that were kept under wraps for years. Since he made his debut on the television screen as a host, the former India captain has presented many unknown facts about his career.

During one of the episodes of the Rohit Sharma Show, the former captain especially named two people who took him into the Indian cricket team. Among those two, one is former men's national cricket team selector Dilip Vengsarkar.

Rohit Sharma played his first match for Team India in 2007

Sharma made his debut for the India National Cricket Team in 2007 for the One Day Internationals and the T20Is. Then in 2013, the Mumbaikar made his Test team debut. Currently, Rohit Sharma is 39, nearing his retirement from international cricket, and keeps himself active only in the ODI format.

During the reality show, Sharma was asked, 'Who scouted you for Team India?' In reply, the experienced opener named two people. When Rohit was an emerging cricketer, Dilip Vengsarkar was the head of the selectors' panel. Sharma stated that he will thank him for the rest of his life for recognizing his talent.

Rohit Sharma mentions Dilip Vengsarkar and Vasoo Paranjpe

Another person who helped shape Sharma's career the most was Vasoo Paranjpe. When Sharma used to play in age-group cricket, Paranjpe used to mentor and guide him. It is well known that the legendary Mumbai cricket coach, mentor, and talent scout played a pivotal role in Sharma's career. He reportedly advocated for Rohit Sharma's first-ever selection into the Mumbai Under-17 squad.

"That's a very good question. Actually, a lot of people have a hand in this. When I was selected for the Indian Team, Dilip Vengsarkar was our chairman. He gave me the opportunity, so I will thank him for the rest of my life. Because without him, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to come to the Indian Team. And before that, when I used to play in the age group, then Vasoo Sir, Vasoo Paranjpe," Rohit Sharma said.

A century against West Indies

Before retiring from Test cricket, Sharma scored 4301 runs in 67 matches and 116 innings, with a batting average of 40.57, supported by 12 hundreds and 18 half-centuries. He retired from T20 Internationals after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup as Team India captain. In 159 matches and 151 innings, the batter registered 4231 runs with an average of 32.05. In the format, he smashed 32 fifties and five centuries, including an unbeaten 121-run knock.

Ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, Sharma remains active in the ODI format. In this format, he has collected 12,120 runs so far after playing 291 matches and 283 innings. He has recently featured in the three-match ODI series against West Indies, where he played a 92-run knock in New Chandigarh and a 101-run knock in Guwahati. In the first match of the series, the opener scored 32 runs.
