Week 6 concluded with an unexpected late thriller.
The San Francisco 49ers outlasted the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday Night Football, with the game coming down to the final seconds.
After San Francisco's offense stalled in the second half following Mike Evans' exit, Washington gradually clawed into the deficit and turned a possible rout into a possible win.
But on the final drive, Jayden Daniels was flagged for intentional grounding that pushed Washington back to 3rd-and-22 with six seconds left following a 10-second runoff.
That led to Daniels running into a sack on the final play.

San Francisco improved to 6-0 with the win, while the Commanders are at 1-4-1 and need a lot more to turn things around.
Let's break down the matchup with winners and losers:
After Mike Evans left with an Achilles injury late in the second quarter, the 49ers found themselves in a familiar situation: a lack of quality wide receiver depth. So Kyle Shanahan used Christian McCaffrey the most he has all season.
McCaffrey ran in two goal-line scores to go with 64 total rushing yards on 16 carries while also hauling in nine catches on 10 targets for 53 yards. The 30-year-old running back can still be a difference maker when called upon.

Daniels wasn't perfect, but he still completed 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Usually, a strong running game complements that statline and can help turn the margins into a win.
But Washington did not have a positive running attack, as Rachaad White had just seven carries for 27 yards to lead the team. Jeremy McNichols had five attempts for 13 yards, while Daniels scrambled four times for 10 yards. Washington needs a lot more in that department to turn its record around.
The 49ers quarterback needed just five passing attempts on Monday to make history. Purdy became the NFL's all-time leader in career passer rating, finishing the game at 105.6. In second is Lamar Jackson at 102.7.
The 26-year-old star shone once again despite now being down his top five wideouts, completing 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown and no picks. The 49ers will need some bodies back on offense, as Purdy's ceiling with a healthy core is sky high.

The 49ers are down Ricky Pearsall, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. Evans was the latest to exit with an injury.

It was ultimately the reason San Francisco failed to score more than three points in the second half, as a wideout room comprising Brandin Cooks, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing is not at the required level for sustained success. It could be a position the 49ers address via trade, with Brandon Aiyuk another name not involved due to off-field reasons.
It's not all doom and gloom for Washington with its current record. No. 7 overall pick Sonny Styles is emerging as a true force at linebacker, one worth building a defense around.
The Ohio State product delivered a game-high 13 tackles (seven solo) and one pass defended, which came against Evans.

There's still obvious polishing he has to do at just 21 years old, but the athleticism and tools are all present for a star prospect.
