The Atlanta Falcons are playing to keep the playoffs within reach against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers. Through three quarters, it’s looking good for the Falcons to pull off the upset, but despite Atlanta playing at home, several reporters at Mercedes-Benz Stadium said 49ers fans sounded louder than the Falcons crowd.
The NFL world trolled Falcons fans for their turnout in a must-win game for Atlanta.
The Falcons are flying through three quarters with a lead over the 49ers. It’s a home game for Atlanta, but it sounds like it’s being played at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco.
“Literally like a home game for 49ers in ATL,” said Jennifer Lee Chan, a 49ers beat writer.
“Already sounds like a home game for the 49ers,” added Grant Cohn, another 49ers reporter.
Cohn took a shot at the Falcons faithful. He wasn’t done after simply reporting that the stadium sounded like a 49ers home game; he ripped into the Falcons fans with a backhanded remark about how nice the city would be if the fans showed up when their team needs them most.
“Atlanta would be an incredible NFL city if the Falcons had more than 10 fans,” said Cohn.
The Falcons have to win this game to avoid dropping to 2-5. While the NFC South is a disaster, winning this game would put them on a tough uphill climb to make a run at the division.
Atlanta would have to be nearly perfect to make the playoffs without beating the 49ers. It would be a huge momentum boost for them, but it doesn’t help when your team doesn’t have home-field advantage to help carry that extra momentum.
“This is a 49ers home game in Atlanta. TD roar was louder than Levi’s. Sounded like Candlestick,” added a third 49ers reporter, David Lombardi.
“Atlanta Falcons have the worst home field advantage east of Las Vegas in the NFL,” said one fan.
One Falcons fan was also upset and wrote, “The fact that every home game for the Falcons is just a home game for the visiting team in the Benz is embarrassing.”
Another Falcons fan added, “I ain’t gone lie… these 49ers fans are deep at the Benz today!! It don’t mean nothing though!”
With a win, the Falcons would give their fans something to cheer about.
Maybe that is what the fans need to see to pack the stadium and give the Falcons the noise that they are looking for. But until then, teams that travel well will drown out Falcons fans and neutralize the home-field advantage.
