Every Powys town and road on the Tour de France route mapped

Stage three of the race will start in Welshpool on Sunday, July 4, before heading south through the heart of Powys on its way to a finish in Cardiff.

The 223km stage is set to be one of the toughest of the Grand Départ, featuring two King of the Mountains climbs within the county.

The peloton will roll out near Powis Castle in Welshpool before joining the A483 through Refail, Garthmyl and Abermule.

In Newtown, riders will leave the A483 and travel along Pool Road, passing Tesco, McDonald's and St David's Church before turning onto Dolfor Road near Lidl.

The route will continue past Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd and Hope Church before rejoining the bypass and heading south.

Sprint finish in Llandrindod Wells

The race will then continue along the A483 through Dolfor, Llanbadarn Fynydd, Llanbister and Crossgates before reaching Llandrindod Wells, where spectators will be able to watch the stage's intermediate sprint in Tremont Road and temple Street.

After passing through Howey and Llanelwedd, riders will briefly join the A470 in Builth Wells before returning to the A483 towards Cilmeri.

The first major climb of the day begins at Garth, where cyclists leave the main road and join the B4519 for the Côte de Epynt King of the Mountains section.

After cresting the climb, the route drops towards Upper Chapel and Llandefaelog Fach before reaching Brecon.

Through the heart of Brecon

In Brecon, the race will pass through Pendre and Priory Hill near the cathedral before crossing the River Honddu and travelling via The Struet and Market Street.

Cyclists will then cross the River Usk before continuing along Bridge Street, Orchard Street, Church Street and Newgate Street to rejoin the A470.

From Libanus, riders will tackle the Côte de Bannau Brycheiniog, the second King of the Mountains climb within Powys.

The ascent finishes near the Storey Arms Outdoor Education Centre, close to Pen y Fan, the highest peak in south Wales.

The peloton will then continue south along the A470 past the Beacons Reservoir before turning onto the A4059 and leaving Powys as the race heads towards Cardiff.
