Michael Carrick is under pressure at Manchester United

Michael Carrick said he hadn't given his own position any thought despite the pressure mounting after Manchester United suffered Champions League humiliation against Como.

Carrick also dodged a question on whether he had considered quitting after he criticised the effort levels of some of his players during a 4-1 defeat to the Serie A side.

United are now without a win in seven games in all competitions and have won just two of their 11 games this season, and Carrick felt the need to go and apologise to the fans at full-time, before rounding on his players. But he was less clear on his own future after a dismal display in the rain on the shores of Lake Como.

"Listen, I've not given my own position any thought - this is for the supporters - I was one of them watching that, and I wasn't happy at all," he said.

Asked if he had considered walking away, Carrick said: " It's not about me right now, and my feelings in that regard. It's more as a team and as a football club, what we want to look like, what we should look like.

"And as I said, the results can come and go at times, but you've got to do it in a certain way. And that wasn't it."

Carrick raised his palms to the 100 or so fans who remained in the away end at full-time in a gesture of apology and explained why he did that after the game.

"I have to apologise to the supporters," he said. "I went over to the end and I care about this football club as much as anyone, if not more, with the position that I'm in and what I value this football club.

"For us to play in that way, it's not acceptable. It wasn't a good performance at all."
