Eddie Howe has emerged as a leading candidate to become Manchester United’s next manager as pressure continues to grow on Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils are enduring a disastrous start to the 2026/27 campaign, with their latest humiliation raising serious questions about the club’s direction.
Carrick initially impressed during his interim spell before overseeing a strong conclusion to last season, earning the opportunity to lead United into the new campaign.
However, that early optimism has disappeared, with United managing just two victories from their opening 11 matches across all competitions.
Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como represented another devastating setback after a lacklustre draw against Leeds United on Sunday.
Nico Paz scored twice for the Italian side, while Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also found the net. Joshua Zirkzee scored United’s consolation in stoppage time.
United became the first English club to concede inside the opening two minutes of consecutive major European matches.
Carrick was subsequently seen apologising to travelling supporters, with his position becoming increasingly uncertain.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is interested in replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United.
Nixon reports that Howe is currently the bookmakers’ favourite for the position, while sources close to the Englishman suggest he would welcome the opportunity.
The 48-year-old is reportedly admired by figures at Old Trafford, with his experience and availability making him an appealing candidate during United’s current crisis.
Howe previously transformed Bournemouth’s fortunes, guiding the club from the lower divisions to the Premier League, including winning the Championship title in 2015.
He subsequently took charge of Newcastle in November 2021, inheriting a side battling relegation before establishing the Magpies as a competitive Premier League outfit.
Having since departed Newcastle, Howe is understood to be interested in returning to Premier League management as soon as possible.
Although he has been linked with other vacancies, Nixon suggests Manchester United represents the type of challenge Howe would be prepared to accept.
No formal approach or negotiations have been confirmed, but Carrick’s worsening results could force United’s hierarchy into a managerial decision.
