Jones family makes feelings clear on Cowboys coach after latest NFL disappointment
Jerry Jones

Even at 2-4, Dallas Cowboys ownership isn't flinching. Second-year coach Brian Schottenheimer is the subject of much consternation in Dallas sports talk world, but the veteran NFL man has the backing of both Jerry and Stephen Jones.

The Cowboys tamely fell 23-13 in a road Sunday Night Football defeat to the Green Bay Packers. Schottenheimer, the team's offensive playcaller, didn't call an effective game until the first quarter.

Both Jerry and Stephen were asked about Schottenheimer's job security this week, and neither flinched in their support. Even at 2-4, Dallas is just 1.5 games out of the 3-2-1 New York Giants in first place in the NFC East.

Jerry Jones on Schottenheimer

Jerry Jones, 84, has seen sunnier days with the Dallas. His team won three Super Bowls in the 1990s but hasn't even cracked the NFC Championship Game since.

"[Schottenheimer] explained as far as what we were doing and what we need to do better," Jones, the Cowboys' owner for the last 37 years, said at the league meetings in New York this week.

"He was just as tactical, and there was no 'We’ve got to have more effort. We’ve got to have more depth.' Our conversations are more about just really the structure, the schemes, the calls, things like that."

Jones knows that Dallas is very much alive in the NFC playoff chase. Next week, his 2-4 side faces another 2-4 struggling team, the Philadelphia Eagles, who are playing without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

"I see opportunity, and I see it legitimately because I know the things that we have the potential to do, both with our talent, both with our schemes, adjustments, I’ve seen us do (it) in the spring, the kinds of adjustments that you might want to do between the halves," Jones continued.

"I’m frustrated, and I’m disappointed that we’re sitting here with this record. But I sure know [what] we have in place. It’s not internal. It’s from within the mirror, is what everybody’s got to look for."

Stephen Jones on Schottenheimer

Stephen Jones, Jerry Jones's 67-year-old eldest son, holds a list of Dallas job titles, including: Co-Owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, and Director of Player Personnel.

He answered a far more direct question about Schottenheimer: whether ownership still trusts him. Speaking on 150.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jones was certain.

"Absolutely. There's not any question in Jerry's and I's mind," the younger Jones said. "He has the team. There's no question they want to go out there and execute and make things happen.

"We feel really good....About our coaching staff. We just have to continue to evolve and get to a point where we can win these football games.

"Obviously very disappointing," he continued. "Frustrated. But at the same time, we got a lot of football to play. We've got resolve. We just got to go back to work. We like the players. We like the coaches."
