Dominik Szoboszlai appears to have dropped a major hint that he will return from injury for Liverpool against Brentford on Saturday.
The Reds’ influential reigning Player of the Season has missed the last two matches against Manchester City and LASK Linz after returning from international duty with Hungary carrying a hamstring issue.
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola said on Thursday that it was too early to tell if Szoboszlai - along with fellow injured stars Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo - would be in contention to return for the trip to Brentford, though said he was leaving the “chance open”.
There have been no further updates, training pictures or team news leaks to have emerged since then, leaving fans anxiously waiting to see if any of that key trio will be available for a tough game against an in-form Bees side who remain unbeaten this season so far and sit fourth in the Premier League table.
However, Szoboszlai himself now looks to have strongly hinted at a return in west London after posting a matchday graphic to his official Instagram Stories on Saturday morning.
That is something the player does regularly when he is set to feature in a game, with the absence of such a post last weekend helping to spark the initial concerns that he would not be involved against City, despite no injury having been made public in the build-up to a 3-0 loss at Anfield.
He did not do it ahead of the thumping Champions League win over LASK on Wednesday either, having not made the trip to Austria. It remains to be seen if either Isak or Gakpo will be involved against Brentford following respective thigh and ankle injuries sustained on international duty.
The return of Szoboszlai would be a huge boost for Liverpool, who are without Ryan Gravenberch on Saturday as he serves a one-match suspension following a controversial and costly dismissal for two bookable offences against City.
If fit enough, the versatile Szoboszlai should slide straight back into the double midfield pivot alongside Alexis Mac Allister, who was given a rest in midweek as teenager Trey Nyoni lined up in the engine room with Gravenberch.
However, Iraola has expressed full faith in the highly-rated Nyoni to start in the Premier League if required, with fellow youngster Lewis Koumas likely to keep his place in attack against Brentford if Isak and Gakpo remain sidelined, having scored his first Champions League goal against LASK.
Szoboszlai’s return would also give Iraola more options further forward amid the latest sustained criticism of Florian Wirtz in the No10 role.
