Manchester United has asked about Ivan Toney’s availability ahead of the January transfer window, according to Mark Brus of CaughtOffside. The Al-Ahli striker is among the options being assessed as the club looks for cover in attack.
The 30-year-old is reportedly happy in Saudi Arabia but would consider returning to the Premier League for the right opportunity. United’s interest comes with Benjamin Sesko sidelined by a shin injury, leaving Michael Carrick short of options at center-forward.
United had also considered a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Brus reports that the club has since ended that pursuit after learning the Leeds striker is in advanced talks over a new contract.
The report suggests United is more likely to seek a loan or an inexpensive short-term signing than commit a substantial fee to a young forward. Toney remains one of several names under consideration.
He would bring considerable experience of English football. Toney scored 72 goals in 141 appearances for Brentford, helping the club win promotion in 2021 before establishing himself in the top division. His 20 league goals in 2022-23 placed him third in the Premier League scoring charts, behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
United’s recruitment needs extend beyond attack. The club is also looking at left-back cover following injuries to Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu, after concentrating much of its summer business on midfield.
Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta has also been linked with United. Toney, meanwhile, joined Al-Ahli in August 2024 on a four-year contract, tying him to the Saudi club until 2028.
