Newcastle United v Aston Villa: Team News
Premier League icon

Newcastle United play Aston Villa at St James’ Park this evening, with the Toon finally getting some respite from their long injury list.

They still have several players out but Dan Burn, Joelinton, Amar Dedić, and Will Osula all got minutes against Coventry City.

Villa have a few players missing themselves, a couple long-term. Neither team has any suspensions.

Here is the rest of the team news.

Newcastle United

Bazoumana Touré is the latest to join the injury list. He suffered an ankle injury at the end of the Coventry game, but Matthias Jaissle isn’t too concerned.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said: “Bazou seems to be much better. We’re happy for that [as] it didn’t look well during the match.

“He’s progressing well in the last few days so hopefully he is able to join the group on Saturday.”

Anthony Elanga has been out for several weeks with a thigh injury, and he is unlikely to make the matchday squad. Jaissle was hopeful that the Swede would return to training next week.

“Hopefully next week, he is about to train again with the group at least partially, and we then integrate him again step-by-step. We miss him a lot. I can’t wait to have him back in the squad.”

Tino Livramento, Ewen Jaouen, and Jacob Ramsey have also been dealing with hamstring injuries. Jaissle confirmed that Ramsey is the closest to a return to training.

“He’s making progress. Hopefully next week, he can join in partially in training and then we can build it from there.”

Joelinton and Dan Burn both came off the bench against Coventry – their first minutes of the season. Jaissle admitted that Joelinton may be ready to start, but Burn’s lack of match fitness means he may be on the bench again.

“We missed them so much. Joe is now longer in training compared to Dan and these are the next steps for both of them to give them more game time.

“For Dan, it will most likely be too soon to get that starting position already as he’s just trained a couple of times, but for Joelinton, it could be a bit different.”

Jaissle also addressed the Matias Fernandez-Pardo issue. There have been calls for the 21-year-old to be moved out wide, but Jaissle gave the youngster his backing. Patience is needed, he said.

“Young lads coming to the Premier League for the first time need that adaptation time. Of course, you don’t have time in the Premier League, so the development and adjustment need to be as fast as possible.

“He’s creating the chances and I think it’s just a goal missing to give him the confidence back. He’s an amazing player and he has so much potential.”

Aston Villa

Villa have six players out, but two or three of those could return for this game.

Amadou Onana and George Hemmings have knee injuries, but the timescale is different for both. Onana ruptured his ACL while playing for Belgium at the World Cup and is going to be out for months. Hemmings’ injury is less serious, but he will need a fitness test.

Matteo Ruggeri has a hamstring injury which Unai Emery confirmed will keep him out for “more than one month”.

Ian Maatsen and Brian Madjo both have ankle injuries. Maatsen is unlikely to be available before the end of the month, but Madjo could be in contention for the matchday squad.

Modou Keba Cisse had a groin injury but is back in training and could be involved this evening.
