LeBron James chose to go to the 76ers for the chance to win, here’s how to watch his first game for Philly.
For the second straight season, the Oklahoma City Thunder finished with the best record in the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned his second consecutive MVP, and it looked like the Thunder were on the way to defend their title, claiming the No. 1 seed in the West.
Oklahoma City swept the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers, but lost in seven games to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.
“What we did last year doesn’t matter at this point,” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said. “We’re all at the bottom of the mountain, all 30 teams trying to start our journey.”
San Antonio finished with the second-best record, earning the No. 2 seed in the West and its first trip to the playoffs since 2019.
The Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in five, the Minnesota Timberwolves in six, and the Thunder before losing the Finals to the New York Knicks in five.
“We have a good team, we had a very good playoff run, and we had a very good regular season. But what’s even better and greater is our potential,” Wembanyama said in July.
The 2025-2026 Defensive Player of the Year, a unanimous selection, was eligible for a supermax extension, worth up to $303 million, but chose to sign a 5-year max extension in July, worth up to $252 million.
The Spurs, returning most of their roster, look to become the first NBA Finals runner-up to reach the Finals in consecutive seasons since Cleveland in 2018.
