Liverpool earned a dramatic Carabao Cup fourth-round victory over Chelsea as they secured a 6-5 penalty shoot-out triumph after a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo both scored penalties in quick succession shortly before the interval, with both teams missing twice in the shoot-out before Joe Gomez scored and Wesley Fofana ballooned over.

The result means Andoni Iraola's side, who have been drawn at home to Bournemouth in the quarter-finals, are still challenging on all four fronts and have now won five games in succession.

The ECHO was in attendance at Anfield and here we run the rule over the performances of the Liverpool players...

Giorgi Mamardashvili 8

Didn’t have much to do first half other than pick ball out of net for Chelsea penalty. Decent stop from Rogers second half before excellent save denied Palestra and denied Emegha in the shoot-out with Chelsea on the verge of victory.

Joe Gomez 8

Starting at right-back, imposed himself early with a couple of strong duel victories but began to have issues with the dangerous Rogers. Improved after break and good cross for Araujo chance. Tucked his penalty away nicely.

Ronald Araujo 6

Switched to his more accustomed centre-back position, distribution not always on point first half but defensively solid. Missed good chance when heading at Penders after inverval.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Good interception with Welbeck waiting to run on to throughball before interval and looked to push Liverpool forward. Subbed.

Kostas Tsimikas 7

Plenty of effort down the left going forward but quality of final ball was lacking first half. Much better in that regard as game progressed but hands increasingly full defensively. Poor effort in shoot-out, though.

Ryan Gravenberch 5

Extremely quiet opening half-h/our encapsulated with daft challenge on Caicedo to concede the Chelsea penalty. Not his best night and missed his spot-kick.

Trey Nyoni 6

Aggressive pressing helped bring Liverpool forward and twice almost created chances before break. Good engine kept the Reds ticking. Subbed.

Lewis Koumas 5

Started on the right wing but unable to make much impact as Liverpool struggled to click going forward. Booked and subbed.

James McConnell 5

Operating as a more defensive-minded number 10, couldn’t quite force his way into game despite plenty of effort. Booked and subbed.

Rio Ngumoha 7

Sparked game into life with one dazzling run first half and became more of a threat after the interval as the Reds began utilising the youngster more frequently. Subbed.

Cody Gakpo 6

Spent most of the first half nearly getting on the end of things playing down the middle until converting the spot kick to level and tested Penders from range. Frustrating overall, though.

SUBS

Bradley Barcola (for Koumas 59) 6

Prompted strong save from Penders with shot from edge of area.

Florian Wirtz (for McConnell 59) 6

Couldn't quite force home a late chance in fitful display.

Jeremy Jacquet (for Van Dijk 72) 6

Helped Liverpool resist a late Chelsea surge.

Alexis Mac Allister (for Nyoni 82)

Brought on to take a penalty.

Alexander Isak (for Ngumoha 82)

Also introduced with a shoot-out in mind.
